How about Catholic-baiting/pro-Protestant open Religion Forum posts or Protestant-baiting/pro-Catholic open Religion Forum posts followed by the inevitable Catholic/Protestant hater/bigot whines when someone on the "other side" comments/complains?

SkyDancer, you have just hit the nail on the head. That’s one of the reasons I lurk rather than post very often. Used to be folks said something intelligent, gave some insight, shared something that was worthy rather than sound like a bunch of ignorant punks giving each other high-fives in an echo chamber.

That would be nice as an option, but I think it would bog the system down as SOP. An alternative: a tool the admins can invoke that will pull multiple threads into a single merged thread and "do the right thing" when people reference links into the original threads.
