Just Da_n,
MU-2’S are older aircraft now, but are pretty capable. The picture shows ice and snow on the ground. Doesn’t mean that was a factor, but MU-2’s have a reputation for being a “hot” ship on take-off and landing.
Oldplayer
I am hearing some rumors that there was possibly some University of Florida connections to this flight....we shall see.
The MU-2’s have a very thin laminar flow airfoil (wing). Drag is substantially reduced which made them some of the fastest turboprop general aviation aircraft during their day. To give them better low-speed capability for landing and takeoff they employed a full width flap on the back side of the wing. That left no room for ailerons so the MU’s had spoilers on the top side of the wing to provide turning capability. The spoilers don’t react quite a quickly to control inputs as do conventional ailerons. Because of the rather unconventional controls the MU’s got a reputation as a “hot” ship that was difficult to fly, particularly at low speeds. However as pilots accumulated more hours in the type the incidence of accidents came down considerably. The MU’s are quite capable and safe if flown properly.
RIP.
