RCMP officer mourned Published Friday January 15th, 2010 N.B. ties | Gallagher's body found in Haiti
OTTAWA - An RCMP officer has been found dead in the rubble of his Haitian home - the latest Canadian victim of Tuesday's massive earthquake in the Caribbean country.
Sgt. Mark Gallagher's body was discovered in the capital city of Port-au-Prince, RCMP Commissioner William Elliott announced Thursday.
He lived near Woodstock, N.B., with his wife Lisa.
"Mark's remains were identified visually by a contingent colleague working in collaboration with the search team at his residence," Elliott said.
"We are now doing everything possible to recover Mark's body and arrange for his repatriation.
"This is devastating news for Mark's immediate family and those of us in the RCMP. My profound sympathies go out to Mark's wife Lisa and their children Shane and Heather."
The Nova Scotia-based Mountie was part of a UN training force in Haiti.
Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter expressed sadness at the death of the 51-year-old officer.
"This is a tremendous loss to the RCMP, to Nova Scotia, and to everyone who had the privilege of knowing Sgt. Gallagher," Dexter said in a statement. "He was a fine officer who always put the welfare of others before himself.
"It was this selflessness that led him to volunteer in Haiti. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends."
At least four Canadians have now died as a result of the quake and four are missing.
Sad Canada ping.
aw. Thats sad. A motorcycle cop near here was killed the other day, hit by a schoolbus carrying 9 kids.
Prayers up !
Yikes.
RIP.
RIP.
Was he from N.B. or Nova Scotia? Article seems to say both.
Maybe some sort of special unit as he ended up in Haiti?
He was a city cop in Moncton prior to joining the RCMP. The special unit was a peacekeeping force of 82 RCMP International Peace Operations Branch members from all over. His point of origin for the RCMP must have been N.S. None of the articles referred to that but you must be correct.
