US official questions China space intentions

A senior US defense official on Wednesday voiced doubts about China's insistence that its use of space is for peaceful means as Washington appealed for steady military ties with the rising Asian power. "The Chinese have stated that they oppose the militarization of space. Their actions seem to indicate the contrary intention," said Wallace Gregson, the assistant secretary of defense in charge of Asia.

"We continue to press the Chinese for explanation," Gregson told a congressional hearing.

China says its rapidly growing military budget is for defensive purposes. Chinese President Hu Jintao pledged with US President Barack Obama at a November summit to promote the peaceful use of space.

However, China's air force commander told state media last year that militarization of space was a "historical inevitability."

China in 2007 became the third nation after the United States and the former Soviet Union to conduct a "Star Wars" test shooting down one of its own satellites.

On Tuesday, China said it had successfully intercepted a missile in a test of an air defense system in what analysts described as a show of strength after the United States finalized a sale of missile equipment to Beijing's rival Taiwan.

Admiral Robert F. Willard, the head of the US Pacific Command covering Asia, appealed to China not to sever military relationship after any future US arms package to Taiwan, as Beijing has done in the past.

Willard said he and Defense Secretary Robert Gates told a senior Chinese general, Xu Caihou, during his visit to the United States last year of the "mutual benefit of maintaining it regardless of differences."

Chinese communists have been stealing our secrets for decades, with a special focus on space, military and communications computer technology and then they appear to be lying about their intents to not militarize space? I’m shocked, totally shocked by this allegation. By the way, you can thank Bill Clinton and his cronies for practically giving this information and technology away.

However, China's air force commander told state media last year that militarization of space was a "historical inevitability."

How 'bout that.

Back when the USA was the only country that had the technology to "militarize space," we were told it would be a "historical catastrophe," an "international crime," an "escalation of the nuclear arms race."

Now, all of a sudden, when communist China thinks they can do it, it's "inevitable."

I await Petra Kelly's next anti-militarization song.

Of course, we can put a crimp on Communist China’s space militarization by ENDING FREE TRADE WITH COMMUNIST CHINA

Supporters of Free Trade with Communist China just continue to bankroll the ChiCom military. Lets stop subisdizing the ChiComs and their military......

Those who support Free Trade with Communist China support Communism

Interesting note here.....

Back in the 80’s (I think) there was a series of novels written based around the first book titled “The Seventh Carrier.” The plot of the first book was that one Japanese carrier got trapped by ice and couldn’t participate in the bombing of Pearl Harbor. They managed to get out 40 years later and carried out their attack.

The interesting note is about the second novel in the series. It starts with the Chinese placing satellites in orbit that would instantly destroy anything on Earth producing large amounts of heat in a small area (i.e. jet engines and rockets), thereby destroying all airborne defenses. This made the “seventh carrier” the most formidable weapon in the world, while all other nations rushed to get old WWII era aircraft.
