1 : to make ineffective or powerless : cripple <hamstrung by guilt>
2 : to cripple by cutting the leg tendons
There has never been free trade as long as a monarchy or government existed. Free trade is the free exchange of goods. Due to taxes, regulations, tariffs, etc. there has never been free trade since the caveman traded a sharp rock for a piece of meat.
All the 'free trade' agreements that have been negotiated are a farce and designed to give the govt. of both sides a cut of any deal.
That is the reason many of us call out "Liar" when a govt. official, or even an economist, calls any agreement "free trade".

Thanks for posting that comment. Recognition of merit seems to be a defining feature to both conservatives and liberals. The former considers it vital to putting the best people in the best places, the latter shun the idea like a vampire shuns a cross.
Agreed. As in Vietnam, where America's defeat was engineered not on the battlefield, but by Dems in Congress, in Iraq the left did everything it could to demonize and demoralize the US military effort there, and to exaggerate the problems.
All that said, "success" in any enterprise -- military, business, "nation building," etc. -- is defined as meeting or exceeding managed expectations. For a simple example: if my business earns $2 per share, is that good or bad? Well, if I predicted $1 then I'm a hero. But if I had predicted $3 then I'm a goat.
Truth is, no one expected such a long drawn out affair, especially after the super-quick military victories in Afghanistan and Iraq. My question is: knowing everything we do now, what all coulda, shoulda & woulda been done different to save lives, treasure and time?
More to the point: will our current President learn from President Bush's mistakes, will he simply repeat them, or invent new ones?
It looks like you're actually referring to the extremely liberal Merriam-Webster, which is not Noah Webster's work. Webster's became a genericized trademark that eveb you could put onto a dictionary you write.
And then, recall how liberal Noah Webster was.
From the real Webster, 1830 edition...
