The slave revolt there makes good reading and is a testament to how the desire for freedom is contagious. Where they took a hard left turn from the USA was that they had not the men of education or character to lead them afterwards. They also had very finite resources where the USA had a whole continent to exploit for riches. I don't think a deal with the devil is why they ended up such a mess. Most Voodoo practitioners are Catholics.

Yes, and the people of Haiti had poor luck from the start. A bunch of African tribesmen worked, often to death, and ruled by very cynical people (the French) and given no education or taught the Gospel. They ended up ruled by a series of tinhorn dictators. But if you look at European history, the so-called noble dynasties who ruled our ancestors were little better than 3rd World warlords themselves. I am unhappy when some people say the unfortunate are to blame for their misery. That’s not Christian at all.

Voodoo practitioners cannot be Christian. They may call themselves Catholics but it is not Christianity. If the two co-exist, the Catholicism has been perverted to something it should not be.
