Cuomo: Ford has right to fight Kirsten [primary fight in NY]
NY Post ^ | January 13, 2009 | Carl Campanile and Brendan Scott

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said yesterday that Harold Ford Jr. has every right to challenge Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand because "this is a democracy."

"Do people have a right to run? The answer is yes," said Cuomo, when asked about the possibility of the Tennessee transplant taking on the poll-challenged upstater in a Democratic primary.

"Debate can be a good thing . . . This is a democracy, the last time I checked," said Cuomo, who himself is feeling mounting pressure from black leaders such as former Mayor David Dinkins, Rep. Charles Rangel and Gov. Paterson's dad, Basil, not to challenge the governor in a Democratic primary this year.

"It's OK for anyone to run for office," Cuomo said.

"The Democratic Party has a long tradition of people running in primaries, and elections are a good thing . . . Do people have a right to run? The answer is yes. Do people have a right to opinions? The answer is also yes."

Cuomo added, "I think the races themselves can be positive, especially today when you have a lot of serious issues. And people want answers. The debate and dialogue in and of itself can be helpful."

It would be a very, very expensive fight for both sides, for a Senate seat the Dumocrats are in NO danger of losing.

This is a dream for the Republicans - watching the Dums blow an incredible amount of money for absolutely no benefit.

Which is why Franklin said, "A republic, ma'am...if you can keep it."

Who is “Gov. Paterson’s dad, Basil” and what influence would he have to pressure Cuomo not to run for Gov?

In Tennessee, the dims “convinced” people not to run against ford in the primary(wish somebody would ask Kurita about party loyalty) so it looks like the RATs haven't gone that far up there. Why do I have the thought that the dnc is grooming harold,jr to run for president?

I think it’s time that former State Controller Carl McCall is given a fair chance at a top line place on the Democrat statewide ticket. Now that the Clinton machine is in tatters, what better time than now?

It would also ruin Mario’s kid’s day.

“Mario!..azienda me...tu se profiono sfacim!”

New York has a long history of carpetbaggers running for the Senate, starting with Bobby Kennedy.

If Paterson runs for Governor, he’ll lose. If Ford takes the nomination away from Gillibrand, he’ll probably lose. Leave well enough alone.

What’s with people abandoning their home states to go to New York?

Why did Hillary decide to run for Senate in New York, rather than return to Arkansas and run for office there? She has never, ever answered that question, to my knowledge.

And now Harold Ford has left Tennessee, lives in New York, and now wants to resume his political career?

I think these politicians are too liberal for the places they left. They couldn’t get elected there, so they go to a liberal place to run for office.

What Cuuumo meant to say, is that it’s a democracy only among democrats. Lenin used to call it democratic centralism.Once the debate is over all have to bow to the leader. The rest of us peons have no choice but to obey the masters.
