A major magnitude 7.3 quake hit the impoverished country of Haiti Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The epicentre of the quake, which was initially reported a magnitude 7.0 off the coast, was located inland, six miles (10 km) west of Carrefour, close to the capital Port-au-Prince and was only 20.5 miles (30 km) deep. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere....

Absolutely heart breaking. I can’t even imagine.
Yeah, the guy on CNN summed it up. He said they weren’t prepared to deal with day to day affairs, and something like this would be tough for an advanced country.
My spirit breaks. We have had a Compassion child there for years, they have know idea the condition of the school or the children.
Amen!!!!
They way he’s done every thing else, it’ll be two weeks before he even says anything about this. That’s ok, it’ll give all the Christian charities time to get in and really help out.

Footage from CBS shot shortly after the quake.

It’s truly heart breaking. The missionary that FoxNews talked to said he jumped on his bike and went around the town he said there were buildings collapsed everywhere and the hospital had collapsed too :( I can’t even imagine that level of misery. I don’t think there was much he could do, the sun was setting when it happened. They don’t have much of an infrastructure and now I’m sure they have none. God have mercy on Haiti and mercy and protection for svcw’s little compassion child.
She’s adorable!!! All the best, my FRiend!!
I guess Anderson Cooper is going down there and said he’s going to try to get to Port Au Prince in the morning....
No kidding :( it’s almost unbearable to think about it.
Incredible.
Y’know, there may even be an FR topic about Port Royal. That was a tsunami event, reputedly the only survivor was a guy sobering up in the hoosegow. A guy I used to know from Montserrat (he left a good job down there, close to retirement, because of the little volcano problem; eventually he went back and finished up his service just so he could retire on pension) often spoke of Guadaloupe, which had a volcanic eruption a century or so ago. Seems like there was a prison survivor that time as well?
It is unbearable to think about. When I see the pictures of the bodies, I keep thinking this was someone’s parent, child, friend. Horrific.
Wow! It looks like the 2nd floor has pancaked onto the first.
Amen. A high school girl from our church, who intends to be a missionary full time, went to Haiti on a short term trip a couple years ago and it changed her life. She came back overwhelmed by the difference in life there vs here and the pictures she showed were just incredible and heartbreaking. But the people were lovely and giving, despite their utter poverty.
Another friend is in the process of adopting a young Haitian orphan, has been going through that process for going on 2 years now. His orphanage is just outside Port-au-Prince and who knows how he is right now, and I’m sure my friend is distraught with worry.
These are precious human beings, and many of them died today because they happened to live in one of the poorest nations on earth.
May God protect them and guide their efforts.
Some readers will interpret your remarks as racist. I did not find them so. The problem is the society. The people of Haiti are free to create whatever kind of society they want. They can copy the surceases of their island neighbor if they choose to.
When you say "Haiti is reaping what it has sown" I did not interpret that to mean the earthquake but rather the poverty.
She’s beautiful! Have you ever gone down to visit?
No. My daughter is also sponsoring a child there but it’s around $2000 each for us to visit, and that’s not in the budget.
