Mod Lecture Series- Filtering Content on FR

FreeRepublic has many options that allow all users to view specific topic categories the way they want.

For example, if you want to view all categories, link to this page:
http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/*/index

If you, however, don’t want to see blogs, chit chat, religion, etc, link to this page:
http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/news-forum/index

If you are only interested in a specific subject, let’s say 2nd Amendment Issues, you can also sort just by keywords like this:
http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/banglist/index?tab=articles

The architecture of this site allows for the end user to see the content he wants in the way he wants more than most other forum platforms. This site also has XML feeds on which, you can use various widgets around the web to actually feed you information you want. For example, if you want a feed of just breaking news articles, you can link to it using the RSS link at the bottom of the page like this:
http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/breaking-news/feed.rss

You can even use these feeds to display custom content on a mobile device that is formatted best for that device if you like. For example, if you have a Blackberry, you can use this app with the RSS feed of the content you like.
http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/NewsGatorGo/Default.aspx

Speaking of mobile devices, we’ve had a lot of reports from members that the architecture of this site allows it to work far better on most mobile devices than other forum platforms.

We have one member who has actually created a desktop AIR application he uses to give him a custom view of the site’s content he wants to see using these feeds.

Most items posted in Bloggers/Personal are FReepworthy. But way too many are not. I will not ignore Bloggers/Personal just because of a few morons, but we need to clean house of more than a few (mostly newbies) idiot bloggers who post a 10 word article in a lame attempt to have you click their blogs, just so they can get the google ad revenue.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, the freaking blogpimps are ruining an integral feature of FR’s relevance, archival links to original documentation and original mainstream media news reports along with discussion based upon those sources.

Many if not all of the blogpimps will eventually remove/abandon/reorganize the content of their blog urls. Leaving FR with a archive of discussions on source material that is disconnected and probably permanently severed from the Freeper discussions/threads on the source.

Zero value long term for FR.

Very high short term value to blogpimps in their push for unique visitors, long tail authority ratings on technorati and thuthlaidbear etc, advertising click through revenues, and etc.

I get it on my Blackberry, but it only does one column at a time, so I have to drop to the bottom to get the News/Activism and topics. Responding is easy, too.

Me too; hopelessly out of date. I just set my preference on "Latest Posts" and read everything that looks interesting. But then, I've been here through all the many changes over the years. Every time Jim changes something, I break out in hives. Most of the time I am amazed that I ever learned how to pretty much do whatever I need to do to enjoy the site. Which reminds me;

FYI: my FR front page view from a few months ago. Don't ask how I did it a could of yrs ago. I could never figure out how to do it again, 'cause it is confusing to non-left brains like me. I love it and won't change it, as it's a very comprehensive view of the site.

I'm sure one of our many trusty techies on FR can give tips for those who'd like them.
