However, we had a little chance early on in 'o7-o8 to get behind an honest-to-God conservative WITH a long history in Congress of voting against creeping Socialism/Communism, who was 100% strong against the illegal invasion and who was a true "compassionate conservative" without being a dweeby social-issues moron--lived in San Diego and personally took jugs of water to dehydrated Mexicans invading the border, but at the same time either sent them back or directed them to the path for legal entry.
The hierarchy of the GOP gave their thumbs-down disapproval for this man, and their lackeys plus the media acted accordingly, blocking stories favorable to him or encouraging disinterest--"not well-known, a dark horse", "not impressive"(meaning not flashy).
Whether he could have won against the Chi-ACORN machine is a question mark, just a hypothesis. Far too many conservatives dismissed him with, "Who?" "Nobody knows him", "he can't win!" Licked before you start.
His name is Duncan Hunter, was Lt Col Marine in Vietnam.
He was a Lieutenant in Vietnam, and the reason that he never took off is the same reason that no knew about him during the 28 years that he was a congressman, it was the same reason that he was barely known in California, it was the same reason that he never ran for the Senate, or the Governorship, he was meant to be a good conservative in a safe congressional district, not a national figure.

And yet the same thing could have fairly been said about Sarah Palin prior to the convention. Puzzling...

Just for accuracy's sake, DH was an Army LT in Vietnam and served with the 75th Rangers, attached to the 173rd ABN.
Totally agree with your assessment though. A missed opportunity if there ever was one.
