Washington Fires Back At Schwarzenegger

Washington Fires Back At Schwarzenegger U.S. legislators say criticism over funding is an attempt to deflect blame for state's budget problems.

Michael Rothfeld and Richard Simon January 11, 2010

Reporting from Washington and Sacramento - For Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, blasting the federal government for California's problems has become an oft-used routine since his first days in office. But in a new twist, federal officials are firing back.

The bicoastal fusillade, which continued Monday, began last week when Schwarzenegger attributed part of the state's $20-billion deficit to what he called an unfair federal funding formula, criticized the national healthcare plan and included an implicit message of extortion for federal lawmakers in his budget: Come up with an extra $6.9 billion for California or share the blame for eliminating state programs for children, the elderly, the disabled and the poor.

This did not sit well with the state's representatives in Congress, who felt unappreciated for helping win tens of billions of dollars in federal stimulus funds for the state last year and offering hope of more aid in a jobs bill now moving through Congress.

Most of those lawmakers are up for reelection and saw a governor with record low-approval ratings (and who doesn't want financial crisis as his legacy) trying to deflect responsibility for a budget he hasn't been able to control.

"The governor got himself into this mess," said Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Tulare). "He wants everybody to like him instead of making the tough decisions. It's kind of silly to come to the federal government."

For every dollar CA citizens send to DC, they see $.78 in return.

Considering the size of CA and the size of its' economy...CA is supporting several small states.

It's a LEGITIMATE position.

Aw, you mean other “moderate” GOP Obama kiss-ass gets his hand slapped when he becomes inconvenient?

I had high hopes for Arnold in the recall. Mainly out of some kid-like hero worship from his bodybuilding days. Any nasty things I said about the NcClintock folks at the time, I apologize.

I still cannot believe how well I nailed it 7 years ago right here on FR predicting this guy would be a fiasco. He never gave any indication he was ever a Conservative, nor has he ever since. I think he mistook that “Republican” was more akin to the Spanish Republicans, and anyone familiar with the Spanish Republicans opposed to Franco knows that there was nothing either right-wing or Conservative about them, indeed, Spanish Republicans were true-believing Communists. The fact that he managed the impossible, of making Gray Davis look like Calvin Coolidge in budgetary/fiscal austerity, is nothing short of jaw-dropping. He has also managed to completely disavow Californians of the notion that the Republican party are positive for governance, and that has extended to the current leading liberals running to be the standard-bearer to succeed this buffoon.

In California today, illegal immigrants’ cost to the taxpayer is estimated to be $13 billion half the state’s budget deficit.

Add to this the costs of a prison pop that’s almost 50% Illegal.

Cut the aid and deport the illegals held.

Budget in the black in one year or less.

"It's a LEGITIMATE position"

That is correct, but no more legitimate than Texas, or any other state that contributes more than it receives.

Aww, gee. That’s terrible. If there is anything Texas can do to help.....ask Vermont.

According to his own words he thought HHH sounded like the socialist party back home in Austria.

Arnie would pass for a conservative in parts of Europe, say France. So would Hillary Clinton.
