Martha Coakley: Massachusetts' Mike Nifong

Democrat Martha Coakley helped keep an innocent man in prison to advance her political career

We encourage our readers to circulate this material as widely as possible in Massachusetts before the upcoming election.

Barack Obama's ongoing ability to shut down Senate filibusters depends on the upcoming election in Massachusetts, in which incumbent Martha Coakley (D) faces Scott Brown (R). Martha Coakley's prominent role in the Amirault scandal, in which innocent people were railroaded to prison on the basis of fabricated evidence and even solicitation of perjury, makes her totally unfit to hold any position of public trust or responsibility. Everybody who supports the use of DNA to exonerate prisoners should take a very close look at Martha Coakley's conduct and ethics, and make sure she is not reelected. Any African-American in Massachusetts who might be inclined to vote "Donkey Good, Elephant Bad" should remember that Martha Coakley was a party to what could best be described as a judicial lynching, the equivalent of what happened in the Bad Old Days when a black man was accused of raping a white woman.

...In Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania, a former judge named Mark Ciavarella is under felony indictment for sending juveniles to detention facilities without trial (or without informing them of their rights) for the alleged purpose of enriching the detention facilities in question. Durham prosecutor Mike Nifong was disbarred after it was shown that he knowingly and willfully withheld exculpatory evidence. We cannot say whether the alleged actions of Scott Harshbarger and Martha Coakley would, if proven, constitute crimes or cause for disbarment. As far as ethics and character go, however, the only difference between Mark Ciavarella and Mike Nifong, and Scott Harshbarger and Martha Coakely, is that the former got caught.

If true I hope she loses. I am a member of the innocence project and there is nothing worse than innocent people being jailed. GO SCOTT!

I'm not easily shocked, but I absolutely was when I read the Dorothy Rabinowitz pieces re in the WSJ a few years back which describe how innocent folks were sent to prison, and kept there, in order for some true scoundrels to feel important.

The title==> Martha Coakley: Massachusetts’ Mike Nifong is an apt one, and will send a sobering shiver to the very marrow of Massachusetts voters.

The stench of “liberalism” reeks over Massachusetts like a rancid fog.

This scandal is par for the course.

I remember the WSJ coverage and was reminded again when Michelle Malkin recently highlighted Coakley’s role.

Does anyone know if this has been brought up in the campaign, either in the press or by the candidates? It would seem to be a worthwhile part of Coakley’s resume for Scott to dwell on in tonight's debate.

The fact that the Dem’s MA Senate candidate has some Nifong-like characteristics.

abb had the main ping list for the Duke Lacrosse scandal, in which Mike Nifong misused his proprietorial powers.

Oh, it's true, all right. Scott Harshbarger rode his conviction of the Amiraults to higher office, and years later, Martha Coakley refused to release Gerald Amirault, even after it became clear to everyone else that he was never guilty. His mother, Violet, and his wife, Cheryl, had also spent time in jail, but they had been released several years earlier. Unfortunately Violet died before Gerald was released.

Martha's actions were despicable.

Coakley played real hard ball with the Amiraults. She was all over the TV and radio trashing them but when she finally agreed to let Violet out of prison it was with the provision that she give no interviews with the media. I can’t imagine what the Amiraults think when they see a Coakley for Senate bumper sticker. They have to despise her for ruining the lives of so many people. Dorothy Rabinowitz’s articles are bone chilling.

Coakley also wanted to get the poor nanny for first degree murder. Fortunately some judges and lawyers were onto her by this time and the nanny was able to get back to Great Britain.

Coakley is very bad news.
