Susan Molinari Rules Out Senate Run [vs. Gillibrand, NY]

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Citing responsibilities as a parent and a professional, former Rep. Susan Molinari announced today she would not challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in November.

Said Ms. Molinari in a press release:

"Over the past week, I've taken the counsel of friends, family and New York political and civic leaders about seeking election to the United States Senate. These are challenging times for our country and returning to public service to address issues like the economy and terrorism would be a great honor.

"After much reflection, it is clear that a statewide race this year is not a practical option for me and our family. Bill and I have young daughters who are our first priority and, coupled with professional and civic responsibilities, preclude this campaign.

"I deeply appreciate the many offers of support from across New York and look forward to continuing to work with these friends and leaders to address our state and nation's challenges."

Ms. Molinari, 52, a Republican, who left Congress in 1997 and currently lives in Virginia, said on Thursday she was mulling mounting a challenge to Sen. Gillibrand.

She had been urged to run by her father, former Congressman and Borough President Guy Molinari, and by former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

With all due respect, this was a weak candidate who would have wilted in the spotlight.

Easily Conservative enough for this deep blue state, but too long out of politics, too long in the lobbying game and too long living in Virginia.

Who is her husband? Isn’t he someone who was in Congress? I swear she came with him years ago to speak at our Lincoln Day dinner.

Boy, that was fast. Wasn’t it just 2 days that passed after a trial balloon was floated before she bows out?

I don’t know where that family went wrong, but Guy Molinari and his daughter Susan couldn’t have been more starkly different in their political views. Other than their Republican Party affiliation, do they even have anything in common?

In order to control the feds we need to control the states. The state dictates how much power the feds should have, not the other way around. Albany is a cesspool of criminal elements and needs to be flushed out to sea!

“I don’t know where that family went wrong, but Guy Molinari and his daughter Susan couldn’t have been more starkly different in their political views...”

Chiefly they differed on abortion. Susan is pro-choice - as are an unusually large amount of NY women who otherwise consider themselves conservative.

Other than that, they are both reliably conservative on almost all other issues. at the time she was in congress, she was a “reach-across-the-aisle” Republican, but that was before in was widely known what would result from such weakness.
