And Speaking of Massachusetts... [TNR]
the new republic ^ | 1/8/10 | Jonathan Cohn

Over at the Spine, Marty Peretz writes about the struggles of Martha Coakley, Democratic candidate in the special election to fill the late Ted Kennedy's Senate seat. (Marty called this one a while ago.*) And the news is indeed alarming, according to Public Policy Polling:

The massive enthusiasm gap we saw in Virginia is playing itself out in Massachusetts as well. Republican voters are fired up and they're going to turn out. Martha Coakley needs to have a coherent message up on the air over the last ten days that her election is critical to health care passing and Kennedy's legacy--right now Democrats in the state are not feeling a sense of urgency. ... Brown's favorables are up around 60%, a product of his having had the airwaves to himself for the last week. By comparison Bob McDonnell's were at 55% right before his election and Chris Christie's were only at 43%. ... This has become a losable race for Democrats- but it could also be easily winnable if Coakley gets her act together for the last week of the campaign. Complacency is the Democrats' biggest enemy at this point and something that needs to be overcome to avoid a potential disaster.

Losing Kennedy's old seat to the Republicans would, obviously, be an emotional blow. But it would be potentially devastating to health care reform. Remember: that the Senate bill passed with exactly sixty votes, just enough to break the united Republican filibuster.

But the Senate isn't finished yet. It will have to sign off on the final compromise between its bill and the House's version. That, too, will require sixty to break the inevitable Republican filibuster.

Most Patriot fans were probably looking for something else to do ten minutes into yesterdays game ... the Ravens decimated the Patriots in every phase of the game.

Brown is a courageous man and deserves to win.

Anyone who tries to beard the dragon in its den deserves praise.

But remember - the average Maschusett is mentally ill - from a political and moral perspective.

The State which gave us Adams, Bunker Hill and a Revolution in freedom, has changed dramatically.

These people re-elected again and again, a serial philanderer and alcoholic, a bloated disgusting carcess with not the slightest thread of moral courage or human decency. An empty shell who left a woman to slowly drown in his car while he was safely ensconced far away, trying to lie, and deal to protect his political career. He needn’t have bothered. He was a Kennedy in Massachusetts, and little incidentals like that meant nothing to the Kennedy-worshippers up there. You could call an ass “Kennedy” and run it for Congress, and the scum up in Boston would elect it - as they had apparently done in the past.

Don’t rely on Massachusetts to “do the right thing”.

They won’t.

Good post.

Technically she suffocated in a small airspace rather than drowned. Which is of course worse: it took a long time for her to die, and Kennedy could almost certainly have done something to help her.

The question of Gerald Amirault appears to loom large in this one and of the questions which people might ask, one strikes me as most curious, i.e. why has nobody ever been sued over any of those witchcraft "ritual abuse" trials?

Did they make Amirault sign some sort of a never-sue deal before letting him out? What about Grant Snowden and Bobby Fijnje?

I hope she listens to this guy. There isn’t any faster way to torpedo herself than to make this election about the healthcare bills. These guys are in the process of committing the fatal error. Not peddling B.S. to the public (that’ll usually work), but believing and acting on your own B.S. They’re determined to ignore all the evidence that the public doesn’t want Obamacare because they don’t wish to believe it.

Perhaps even a close race in MA might scare a few yes votes away on both the senate and the house.

Fuel for though.

To the Patriots in Massachusetts.

Take a page from the IRANIAN PEOPLE.!!!!!. YES THE IRANIAN PEOPLE.

They were able to mobilize the masses by using twitter. They posted sites and meeting places by using this medium and successfully mounted a movement that up until today resonates in their country.

Use this technology to inform on the precincts that have abnormalities such as, low turnout, intimidation by ACORN, and irregularities in absentee ballots. Send patriots to counter peacefully these abnormalities. Those actions should make this election more characteristic of the people’s wishes.

The Kennedy Machine, ACORN, and the mechanism they have in place, are design to cheat us of our vote. Only SHEAR NUMBERS will tilt the democratic process in your favor.

Use twitter to report on low turnout in the precincts, call the voters that are unable to go to the polls and facilitate the means to get there. Be vigilant of intimidation and reported. If you use this technology right, you will prevail and give the people of Massachusetts a chance to make history.

Go Patriots.

Great article, mathprof! Thank you so much for posting it!!!

Here's the link to Marty Peretz's comments, in The New Republic, December 31st issue: Can a Republican Really Win Teddy's Seat?.

FWIW, methinks Scott Brown is going to win this one. The problem then becomes: How long will the Secretary of State dawdle before he certifies Brown's election, so he can be sworn in and seated as Massachusetts senator? What if the ObamaKare legislation hits a snag, and can't get done before the Usurper-in-Chief's State of the Union address in February? Are the citizens of Massachusetts to have the swearing and seating of their newly-elected senator indefinitely delayed until this "crap sandwich" is rammed down our throats?

I recall that my own Congresswoman, Niki Tsongas (for whom I NEVER vote) was certified, sworn, and seated in two days, just in time to help out with the House vote to override President Bush's veto of the SCHIPS bill....

And what will people say — and do — if he dawdles? Most Massachusetts voters are already thoroughly sick and tired of this sort of corrupt behavior from our so-called "public servants."

... _ _ _ ...

Thanks again, mathprof!
