There is one episode or film in which Picard specifically defines the communist utopia of the Federation. I think it is in the First Contact movie. I believe he explains the federation to the Alfre Woodard character. He does not say "we're communists", but he describes a world that sounds communist to me.

I was not referring to the prime directive, but to the communist lifestyle of those already within the Federation.

You know, Communism MIGHT WORK if there were unlimited material goods, no struggle for food, and so on, as depicted in the Star Trek universe. If I could go to any store and simply walk out with a 99 foot long HoloTelevision any time I wanted because Robots made them for me, money might not be a big deal to me any more.

Betchya Klingons are still capitalists, though.

You're correct, here's the actual quote from the film: "The economics of the future is somewhat different. You see, money doesn't exist in the 24th century. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives. We work to better ourselves and the rest of humanity."

My reaction to this would be, "So...you're not human anymore, is that it?"

He specifically mentions there is no money (possibly commie, but not necessarily), but also mentions merit. Communism is devoid of that. I have no problem with a world trying to better itself. If it took getting away from money and using individual merit, then so be it.

Really, the folks in the 24th century are smart, creative and productive. So it can't be communism. There's no will to succeed with communism/socialism/liberalism.
