Cornyn calls for Reid to step down as Senate leader
The Houston Chronicle ^ | January 10, 2010

Texas Sen. John Cornyn today became the first member of the Republican congressional leadership to call for Nevada Sen. Harry Reid to step down as Senate Majority Leader.

Cornyn, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said that Reid's 2008 description of Barack Obama as a "light skinned" candidate "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one," quoted in a newly released book, disqualify the embattled Nevadan from serving as the Senate's leader.

The Texas Republican -- along with other GOP officials -- accused top Democrats of having a double-standard: demanding the resignation of then-Majority Leader Trent Lott for lauding then-Sen. Strom Thurmond's segregationist past and accepting an apology from Reid.

I for one don’t want Reid to step down. Let him stay there and get his butt handed to him in November instead!

I agree! Get out of his way and let him twist in the wind.

The way things are going, reid will have his butt handed to him no matter if he’s Senate leader or not. So it’d be better to knock him out now and throw the Senate dims into disarray.

Another nail in reid’s political coffin. Another reason for his ‘constituents’ to take their vote elsewhere. Not that most of them give a rip that he said it, but they ain’t gonna want people to think they have a senator who is dumb enough to say things like that ... or that they are dumb enough to vote for him if he does.

True, but part of his twisting in the wind is dealing with calls for him to step down.

I hate Harry Reid but what exactly is wrong with what he’s said. He’s right. White guilt voters like “diversity” but only if the diversity speaks like white people from the midwest. If they talk like country blacks from Georgia they go running for the hills.

It was wrong when Lott got crucified for saying a nice thing to an old man who was an American war hero and it is wrong for Reid to get crucified for speaking the truth. If he is to be gone defeat him in 2010. If he’s forced out now it will only continue the madness.

And I thought Obama’s election was supposed to level the playing field. Looks like we still have protected classes in this country.

Agreed. If Dirty Harry becomes just another RAT senator, he can start talking and acting moderate just long enough to win re-election. As long as he is majority leader, he can be the gift that keeps on giving.

It is stupid for any Republican to make comments on this issue. If the Dems want to run him out fine. The Republicans should stick to the other issues, like the bribes for health votes and lack of open meetings.

Democrats love to censor and are not allowed to speak any words outside of their playbook. Reid described what he observed. Nothing actually racist at all about what he said. He said nothing bad about blacks or whites. He observed correctly that this particular bi-racial man sounds stereotypically white and not stereotypically black.

I would rather Cornyn had said: “According to democrat rules, Reid should resign.”

The don't call the GOP the stupid party for nothing.

I also hate to be seen as a defender of Old Harry, too. But what he said was factually correct. Anyone even remotely acquainted with liberal racism knows it.

Nothing is wrong with what he said. He is right. It is the left that is treating it like a disaster. I wrote about perceptions in peoples minds.

What the GOP should be doing is simply repeating and replaying Dirty Harry's rant every chance they get, followed by "This is who leads the Democrat party today." No calls for resignation, no indignation, no huffing and puffing. Simply repeating, replaying, and stating "this is who leads the Democrat party today."

See, when you start "attacking", people naturally jump up and want to defend their own side -- no matter how egregious the sin. But if you just calmly, quietly, and matter-of-factly confront people with the truth, inevitably the internal conflict becomes too much. Soon other "irritations" come to the fore. And eventually, they will start eating their own.

Actually, that seems like pretty sound advice. I was enjoying it this morning when the Reid allies (especially the ebony ones who spoke without any negro dialect) were tying themselves up into knots trying to explain how this was different from the Trent Lott non-comments.

I also think we should repeat at every turn that it is the Democratic party who has the most senior Senator, who was the former Grand Master of the KKK. I personally would love it, if, for the next Senate vote, they wheeled him in in his wheel chair with a sheet over the top, but I guess that would be too obvious, huh?
