WASHINGTON -- White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel praised Mayor Daley on Saturday and urged him to run for re-election in 2011 in a statement designed to quash gossip that Emanuel is considering a City Hall bid.
"Mayor Daley is a great mayor for a great city. He has my full support and it is my hope that he will seek re-election," Emanuel said in a written statement.
Emanuel's salute to Daley came after Washington Post columnist Sally Quinn wrote Tuesday that Emanuel "told people that the chief of staff role is an 18-month job and that he is considering a run for mayor of Chicago." That triggered a stream of stories and columns about Emanuel's future.
Daley, who has been mayor for 20 years, has not said yet if he will run for another term. The notion that Emanuel would challenge Daley is ludicrous. Emanuel is a Daley loyalist; Daley's political muscle was key to his winning his House seat.
Asked about the chatter last week, Daley said, "I don't talk to gossip columns.''
As if Daley has anything to fear. A majority of Chicago voters are too stupid to vote for anyone other than a Democrat.
And Mr. Daley better heed it.
Emanuel is so right: the people of Chicago cannot do without their Daley. They need their Daley daily.
A Republican named Bernard Epton, a liberal Republican, almost won in 1983. He said vote for him “before it’s too late.” Well, it’s way past too late. People in Chicago need their daily fix of Daley, just like the West Virginians depend on their Byrd and the Vermonters on their Leahy.
But do they need their daily Daley, or Daley daily ?
