WASHINGTON (AP) - Sarah Palin believed that Sen. John McCain chose her to be his running mate in 2008 because of "God's plan," according to a top political strategist in the Arizona Republican's campaign.
In an interview with the CBS news magazine "60 Minutes," Steve Schmidt described Palin as "very calmnonplussed" after McCain met with her at his Arizona ranch just before putting her on the Republican ticket. McCain had planned to name Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., as his vice presidential choice until word leaked, sparking what Schmidt called political blowback over picking the 2000 Democratic vice presidential nominee.
Schmidt said he asked Palin about her serenity in the face of becoming "one of the most famous people in the world." He quoted her as saying, "It's God's plan."

Now she’s a religious zealot. Sheesh.
She is an answer to my prayer!
Is that supposed to be a criticism of her?
Sure it was God’s plan. Only someone who totally doesn’t understand Christianity would argue that this is an extraordinary idea.
It’s good to know that the commie ‘RATS at “60 Minutes” are still terrified of her.
I have no doubt she is right. God also sent Duncan L. Hunter to run for the presidency, but who listens to God anymore? Though the libs have tried to make Him irelevant, it is my firm belief that if we continue to ignore His will, we will pay the cost bigtime.
The fact that Steve Schmidt and the media thinks her comment is odd says more about them than Sarah Palin. Hey Steve and MSM, give Brit Hume a call, he has some good advice for you.
Frankly, in the aftermath of the 2008 election Steve has looked more and more like the doufous he probably really is.
“God forbid” you mention the word “God” on mainstream channels!
Two dramatically different concepts, but not anything any Democrat, or Steve Schmidt, is able to comprehend.
Somebody give that puke the Vatican main phone number ~ he needs some advice.
Mine too!
Yes, but don’t forget . . . there is no place in the “big tent” for Christians.
Nothing wrong with being strong and accepting big events as “God’s Will”.
I guess she should have run around in circles screaming that she didn’t know what to do. Or maybe offered a sacrifice to a pagan god.
These people make me sick, as they turn every endearing virtue into a supposed negative.
Steve Schmidt is a democrat mole.
This is the point where the story falls apart.
There is nothing wrong with recognizing the Almighty still acts in this World and has a special place in His heart for the United States and will act to ensure the survival of our Nation.
“McCain had planned to name Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn.”
THAT was the Devils plan!
In Sarah’s case it was most likely God’s Plan as commonly understood in the American evangelical subculture. As in “God always knew this would happen and I’m trusting him whatever happens next.” But depend on the media to imply that she was saying God’s a Republican who somehow got control of John McCain.
