but Ford's just don't come close to matching GMC vehicles" Unless you want to carry a load, or set some sheets of T&G plywood down on the bed where they can slide under the saddle box... :o)

Thanks brother...particularly for the faith and prayers.
That pickup is definately a keeper.
It's clean now because of the trip down...but give me a few days back in Idaho in the hills and mountains there and I'll get 'er dirtied up all right and proper! LOL!

No problem with Chevy, that don’t work with your ford?
Works fine for us with the Chevy.

Oops, I replied to the wrong post!
Unless you want to carry a load, or set some sheets of T&G plywood down on the bed where they can slide under the saddle box... :o)
When you load 4x8 sheets, you slide them under the saddle box, and close the tailgate
Same for tongue and grove (cool that you know the TG abbreviation for tongue and groove dude, I'm impressed!) .
Fords have too short of beds to do that?
Get a Chevy...

The standard width of all Chevy Pickup beds at the wheel wells is just over 50" which works for a standard 4 ft wide sheet of plywood. So, with my shortbed, I put down the tail gate and stack them in there underneath the tool box.
With the long bed version (97 1/2" long), you can fit an 8 foot plywood length within the bed...but not on the normal (78 1/2" long) or, as I say, on the short beds. In both the latter cases you have to put the tail gate down.
But, I knew that going in and it works for me.
For me, it's a very nice Z71 offroad 4X4 crew cab truck outfitted with a Flowmaster twin pipe exhaust system, 10 ply on/off road tires, the Westin tube step-side full length runners, the Ranch Hand Summit bumper replacement deer guard, and that Ranch Hand lourvered headache rack and tool box.
I've owned and driven Chevy, Ford, and Dodge. All of the new versions are very nice. My brother's new Platinum Ford crew cab 1/2 ton is a GREAT truck. I believe the Z71 is the best off road package out there, and the Chevy generally retains its value a little better. But any of the new model 4X4, crew cab, off road trucks are fine vehicles.

Having spent a week or so on a new layout for the PMT yard in Milpitas, where the new GM vehicles are taken off the rail cars and stored for distribution, I can attest to the high rate of failure of the frames of GM trucks (buckle in the middle) simply from the tension of the tie-down chains during transport. There were several that failed just during the time that we were laying out the yard, and more stored in the same condition.
This has never happened to Ford or Dodge trucks; just GM, Toyota, and Hondas.
If you need to cary a load, get a Ford!

We have a ‘98 chev 3/4 pu up at the ranch that has about 42 inches between the wells. The only way that thing can carry plywood is if we put crossbars in the notches in the side of the bed to hold the load above the wheels.
I can’t gripe too heavily since it was a freebie, but still, it seems absurd.

Jeff - I’m not into pick-up trucks - what I “enjoyed” was seeing you happy with your wife - and standing in front of your pick-up - and not mentally picturing you under an MRI machine. You’re both looking great - and you’re both still in my prayers...

Jeff, great to see you posting! One of my horse boarders has a really nice new Magnum that she loves...so there she was, in her husband's pickup, and I sez, "Elizabeth, what?" and she sez "I was following a semi and a deer managed to jump out into the road
between us." $3000 worth of damage. Yeah, whatever it takes to replace the ironworks it beats that.
I have my own solution. Got these little bitty deer whistles mounted under the turbo intake. Just missed a moose in the pitch dark a couple of months ago. The whistles worked - he was staring at me. :-)

Thanks Bill and GOP. I drive on down to Houston tomorrow and Thursday morning we start at MD Anderson. The last 10 days here with my brother and his wife, and their kids (my nephews and neices) all grown up now coming by to visit have been a wonderful and welcome interlude...but now its on with the business at hand.
My wife is the one who suggested I finally go ahead and get those additions to my pickup which I have talked about for a long time and slowly been making progress towards. She knew it would be a needed and happy distraction for me. She's a wonderful woman, , my sweetheart from our youth, and great friend and companion who knows me so well.
Thanks for your concern and faith and prayers.
...and Bill, The whistles worked - he was staring at me. :-)
