WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama's most prominent holdover from the Bush administration—Defense Secretary Robert Gates—is staying on for at least another year.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell told The Associated Press late Thursday that Gates and Obama agreed last month that Gates would stay on as Pentagon chief. The commitment is open-ended, but would be for at least the rest of 2010.

When I look at Les Aspin’s actions in the aftermath of the Battle of Mogadishu (i.e. resignation) and compare it to the action of Gates after the Ft. Hood massacre (i.e. denial), I have to say I have far more respect for the former.

You may not like Gates, but he’s better than any replacement that Obama would name. This is good news.

“You may not like Gates, but he’s better than any replacement that Obama would name. This is good news.”

That is so true. Otherwise we’d have a community organiser in the job...

Areed. Very reassuring to have Gates remaining in this oh-so-important position.

The downside is that Gates is a good boy who does what he’s told.

The upside is that Gates is certainly more qualified for the job than anyone Obama might choose to replace him. I hate to think who that might be. Maybe Cindy Sheehan.

".....Gates is a good boy who does what he's told."

Gates does what Brent Scowcroft tells him to do.

Charleston County GOP Censures Sen. Lindsey Graham Senator Eyeing Sec Def Appointment?

Connecting the dots ...

IF Lindsey Graham is vying for Secretary of Defense why would Gates agree to stay on through 2010?

SC is one state that requires the governor to appoint a replacement to the US Senate.

Gov. Sanford is out and it seems the race is wide open, “no clear definition in either party’s primary field.”

An Obama cabinet appointment would further explain “the new maverick's” ‘bipartisan’ positions; i.e. cap-and-trade, amnesty.

Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) is helping to negotiate a nuclear energy amendment that could help bring aboard swing votes who support the industry. Architects and backers of the nuclear effort include Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who are seeking more federal financial backing and other support.

Nuclear Energy Institute spokesman John Keeley said the industry’s priorities include greater funding for loan guarantees. Congress has set aside $18.5 billion thus far for nuclear plant loan guarantees under a DOE financing program first authorized in the 2005 Energy Policy Act. But this would cover only a small number of new plants.

Four proposals remain in the running for DOE guarantees from this funding, according to several published reports. They are: UniStar Nuclear Energy/Constellation Energy Group’s proposed Calvert Cliffs plant in Maryland; NRG Energy Inc.’s South Texas Project; Southern Co.’s Vogtle plant in Georgia; and Scana Corp.’s Summer plant in South Carolina.

Senate Panel Approves Holder Nomination For AG

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said he supports Holder’s view that the country needs to interrogate terrorism suspects based on American values.

“I am confident this new attorney general will have a balanced approach and I look forward to working with him. I know he’s made mistakes and so have I,” Graham said.

USC to get new business building
Funds will come from leasing current building to Department of Justice

An estimated 250 Justice Department employees working in different locations near Washington, D.C., will be relocated to Columbia over an unspecified period.

Graham said U.S. taxpayers will save $42 million by having Justice Department employees working in South Carolina, which has lower costs than Washington.

“It was almost too good to be true,” Graham said of the plan. “But it proved to be true.”

Graham, a Republican, praised U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Deputy Attorney General David Ogden, both of whom were appointed by President Obama, a Democrat.

“I can’t thank Eric Holder and David Ogden enough,” Graham said, adding they offered their support for a leasing plan that was initiated during the administration of George W. Bush.

Lindsey is quirky. I don’t put anything past him.
In fact, I have speculated that, if McCain loses, Lindsey won’t finish his term.
He could very well be eyeing SoD and a 2011 appointment.
