Closing Gitmo: The President's Naive Fixation
Investors.com ^ | January 7, 2010 | CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER

Posted on 01/07/2010 6:00:39 PM PST by Kaslin

On Wednesday, Nigerian would-be bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was indicted by a Michigan grand jury for attempted murder and sundry other criminal charges. The previous day, the State Department announced that his visa had been revoked. The system worked.

Well, it did for Abdulmutallab. What he lost in flying privileges he gained in Miranda rights. He was singing quite freely when seized after trying to bring down Northwest Flight 253 over Detroit. But the Obama administration decided to give him a lawyer and the right to remain silent.

We are now forced to purchase information from this attempted terrorist in the coin of leniency. Absurdly, Abdulmutallab is now in control.

And this is no ordinary information. He was trained by al-Qaida in Yemen, and just days after he was lawyered up and shut up, the U.S. was forced to close its embassy in Yemen because of active threats from the same people who had trained and sent Abdulmutallab.

This is nuts. Even if you wanted ultimately to try him as an ordinary criminal, he could have been detained in military custody — and thus subject to military interrogation — without prejudicing his ultimate disposition.

It is not a naive fixation.

He has promised “El Jefe” (the Boss) (Fidel Castro) that he will give him back GITMO and vacate the island. Professional courtesy of one Commie to another.

SERIOUSLY, this is his intent.

He would. Remember the peanut farmer from Georgia gave the Panama Canal to Panama?

President Bush did do alot more for this country than the thieving, lying, and treasonous left will ever do.

But I could NO LONGER abide by that man’s REFUSAL to protect America with an open border. I couldn’t watch him anymore in 2006. Haven’t watch MSM news, including Fox, since then.

He is merely a vetriloquist’s dummy.

No I do not. I wish Reagan were back in office. He allowed us to be strong.

His legacy was frittered away to nothing by a certain family of utopian globalists.

It is 0bama who wants to give them amnesty. President Bush never did. As a matter of fact he wanted them go back and come in legally through the front door

What a strange post.

What "certain family of utopian globalists" are you referring to?

Kaslin....YES......we should ALL wish that President Bush were in office. My family and I fly frequently, and I felt safe during the Bush years. I knew he was doing everything in his power to protect us - in addition to calling upon the Name of the Lord to give him wisdom and to protect the American people.

Now I am scared to death because we have a "president" who doesn't give a rip about our safety, and believes in no one except himself..

I miss the INTEGRITY George W. Bush brought to the Oval Office.

CK would indeed make a terrific president.

And yes, I wish Bush were back in office. Not perfect but darn good, and on matters surrounding foreign policy, resolute and unflinching.

I believe that Bush spent down every last bit of his political capital keeping this country safe; and I believe that when the final truth is made known, we will all realize that the compromises he made in other dimensions — many of which we do not like — were necessary to score the victories he did on the foreign policy front.

Those who dislike Bush have legitimate reasons, but I wonder ... What tradeoffs did he feel he had to make to advance the one cause of fighting terrorism above all others?

With suicide bombers in the air, cynicism is far less dangerous to the country than naivete.

Krauthammer is exactly right. This naivte is going to get us all killed.

Great article, Kaslin. Thanks!

No. I like him as a commentator but he’s a big lib on some things. Very anti-pro-life for one.

Something tells me the Gitmo terrorists aren’t going to like Illinois winters with the ice, snow and wind. Or the humidity and tornados that come later on.
