Andre Dawson, a five-tool player who won eight Gold Glove and four Silver Slugger Awards in a career spanning 21 seasons with the Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins, was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America in balloting verified by Ernst & Young. He will be inducted into the Hall July 25 at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Dawson was listed on 420 ballots (77.9%) to win election in his ninth year on the ballot. His election brings to 292 the number of elected members of the Hall. Of that total, 203 are former major-league players, of which 109 have been through the BBWAA ballot. Dawson is the 68th outfielder overall elected to the Hall.
A .279 career hitter with 438 home runs, 1,591 runs batted in and 314 stolen bases, Dawson was the National League Rookie of the Year with the Expos in 1977 and the NL Most Valuable Player in 1987 with the Cubs. The eight-time All-Star underwent 12 knee surgeries during his career but ended up with more than 400 home runs and 300 stolen bases, a feat achieved by only two other players in history, Willie Mays and Barry Bonds.
For the first time in BBWAA balloting, two candidates failed to gain election by fewer than 10 votes. Pitcher Bert Blyleven, on the ballot for the 13th time, got 400 votes (74.2%). Second baseman Roberto Alomar, on the ballot for the first time, had 397 (73.7%), the most for a first-year candidate without being elected.

You raise a great point about The Crime Dog and ‘roids. Didn’t think of that. And I totally agree on your Lee Smith sentiment.
Santo was one of the best third basemen to ever play the game. Defensively, I think Brooks Robinson and Pie Traynor were the only ones who were better and he clobbers them both on offensive statistics, even though most of his career was in a pitcher's era.
Ditto for Bert Blyleven-- a very good pitcher, but not up to the Hall of Fame standards compared to the others which you mention. Still, in Bert's case, I think longevity does count for something and he'll get in just as Tommy John earned his way in for the same reason.

Only if he's high on crack. While their career averages in most offensive categories were similar, Alomar scored more runs, had more stolen bases, and was higher with BA/OBP/OPS
Their fielding was essentially a wash, with Sandberg earning 9 Gold Gloves and Alomar earning 10 Gold Gloves.

While Kent had superior power numbers, Alomar was better in runs scored, getting on base, stolen bases, and very similar runs produced per year. However, when you add fielding prowess in, Kent gets blown away.
Agree with you completely on Ron Santo. Hopefully the Veteran’s Committee will get off their butts and get him in while he’s still alive. And they should get Gil Hodges in, too, while they’re at it.

Ryne Sandberg was not as good offensively or defensively as Roberto Alomar.
I’m not sure Alomar wasn’t the best defensively at 2nd base.

If Dawson deserves this, then they ought to kick the door wide open and let every "power" hitter with 10 yrs experience in.... Shameful.

8 Gold Gloves a mediocre fielder?? I saw him often from the right field stands in Wrigley...he was awesome.
He once hit a line drive that couldn’t have been more than 10 feet off the ground that hit the center field wall...he had excellent power!!
Too many people remember how bad he looked when his knees gave out.
Sandberg had 10 Gold Gloves and an MVP award in addition to a .285 lifetime BA and .795 career OPS. He also played in the era prior to PED, so I can at least know that he was clean. I can’t say the same about Alomar.
you dont know anything about bert blyleven. you should go pitch and get 170 strikeouts and 14 wins for twenty years. then you can start talking your big talk.i hope so much that he gets in because he deserves it and i want to stuff it down your mouth.and yes he is A GREAT PITCHER. WAY BETTER THAN A LOT OF OTHER PITCHERS.AND for the record I love that tony perez got in the hall in 2000.
