Freshman Sen. Claire McCaskill uttered seven words rarely heard from a sitting lawmaker: Its OK if I dont get re-elected.
In a profile in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Tuesday, the Missouri Democrat, who was elected just three years ago, offered some uncommon candor on life in the Senate and her frustration with the way Washington works.
Im very frustrated with some of the habits around here, she said. What happens around here is that so many people are more focused on getting everybody to love them and getting re-elected than they are on solving the really hard stuff. Because when you solve hard stuff, you make people mad.
As she reassesses how to spend the second half of her first term, McCaskill said she is going to focus more on a top prioritygovernment accountabilityand less on 2012. Ive just kind of decided that, hey, Im just going to do this, and Missouris hard, so theres a chance, you know, that I wont get re-elected. And if I dont, thats OK. Its not the end of the world.
An early backer of then-Sen. Barack Obama in his presidential primary fight against Hillary Clinton (she endorsed in January 2008 at the urging of her 18 year old daughter), the senator also voices some disappointment with the Obama administration.
She said the White House initially did not do a good enough job to fight perceptions that were on the big guys side instead of on the little guys side.

Well, alrighty then. Sounds like a plan.
OK? It would be fantastic!
This is another “I told you so,” because back in August I wrote a column called “What if They Don’t Care?” arguing that getting “health care” passed was a greater goal than staying in office-—and that they were willing to sacrifice their jobs to do so. Dorgan and now McCaskill seem to be validating this.
More like she and the guys who aren’t running again have been promised positions with the administration. There WILL be payback for them.
Show me the money ... These sacrificial Democrats are being paid off to fall on their sword.
An infinitely wiser and better American than this tool once said:
"You can't be for big government, big taxes and big bureaucracy and still be for the little guy".
Claire was the beneficiary of this phenomenon in 2004 when Republicans crossed over to vote against Bob Holden's bid for a second term as governor.
She lost the gubernatorial race, but won the Senate nomination and election two years later based on the name-recognition she garnered in the governor's race.
She knows she will not win the nomination in 2012. She won't even try.
They can redeem the promises for the 2010 crowd who take a knife for the team, but not the senators who will be defeated in 2012, because there will no longer be a Democratic Administration in 2013. Hollow promises.
Nelson should know better. His behavior is astonishingly stupid.
It would not be hard if they did the will of the people.
Nobody will miss her. What an idiot!
Speaking of idiots, Ben Nelson is dumber than a block of wood. Just looking at that boob, one can tell he is a dimwit. How do these people ever get elected to anything? I can’t imagine voting for them as senior class president, let alone as senator.
It just goes to prove my theory that people who are incapable of doing anything else go into politics.
I remember your column. I am troubled by the resignations and the apparent resignation on the part of the Dems. Something is going on..., and I doubt it is good for the country.
Does anyone remember the circumstances under which her husband got whacked?
*****she and the guys who arent running again have been promised positions with the administration..****
Have been promised lifetime positions in the Politburo!!!
By Nov. 2012 there will be only one political party - no need for elections.
The founders actually expected the Senate to be somewhat detached from popular opinion. The House is another story... and senators like Dorgan can expect high paid lobbyist jobs, Cabinet posts, etc., but what can your run of the mill House member expect? If this Health Care power grab is stopped, it will most likely be in the House.
ba-byeeeeeeee
Ti’s ok with me too! Now let’s make it so!
Simple fact, folks: Claire McCaskill may be the dumbest woman in the universe. Of course, Joe Biden is not only the dumbest man in the universe, he is also the dumbest person in the universe. Claire, my dear, if you are not re-elected, no one, and I mean no one will ever miss you, you glorious airhead!!!
