ANTI-whaling group Sea Shepherd have confirmed one of their protest ships was sunk by Japanese whalers.

The Ady Gil, a lightweight 24m (79-foot) boat went under after being rammed off Antarctica by Shonam Maru, a ship detailed to provide security to the rest of the whaling fleet.

"I absolutely despise the “save the whales” crowd. shoot them and throw them overboard to the sharks!"

Guess you'd start with this guy? President Ronald Reagan

In 1976, the quota for Southern Hemisphere Bryde's whales was set to zero by the IWC. However, Japan proceded to take 225 of them during the 76-77 season by issuing itself a permit to take whales for scientific research under Article VIII of the ICRW. Following this event, the IWC recommended all future applications of Article VIII be reviewed by the IWC scientific committee.

In 1986, Japan introduced a similar proposal and later issued itself a scientific permit to take 825 minke whales and 50 sperm whales every year for ten years. Despite the fact that the IWC scientific committee rejected its research proposals Japan continued whaling.

The IWC adopted a resolution in 1987 recommending Japan not proceed until disagreements over its research proposals were resolved. A second resolution was also adopted on February 14, 1988 recommending Japan not proceed. On February 9, 1988 Japanese whalers killed the first minke whale in Antarctic waters under the new "self issued research whaling" permit.

President Ronald Reagan responded by cutting off Japanese fishing privileges in U.S. waters on April 6, 1988 under the Packwood-Magnuson Amendment.

President Ronald Reagan: "Given the lack of any evidence that Japan is bringing its whaling activities into conformance with the recommendations of the IWC, I am directing the Secretary of State under the Packwood-Magnuson Amendment to withhold 100 percent of the fishing privileges that would otherwise be available to Japan in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone. Japan has requested the opportunity to fish for 3,000 metric tons of sea snails and 5,000 metric tons of Pacific whiting. These requests will be denied. In addition, Japan will be barred from any future allocations of fishing privileges for any other species, including Pacific cod, until the Secretary of Commerce determines that the situation has been corrected." - U.S. President Ronald Reagan, 1988

Thank you for posting a picture. I think that the whales are conscious creatures and it sickens me to see them hunted like this.

Bad analogy. I didn’t say they were human. I said they were conscious. They are, and they know they are. That distinction makes a great deal of difference. It would be like Aliens hunting us. Our consciousness is different than theirs (if they exist) but no less valid or real. We make a grave error in our arrogance, in assuming that because they do not think or live like we do, that they are somehow less.

Piracy and ocean combat come in many forms. The “protesters” were acting as enemy agents.

Don’t go on the open seas and pick a fight and then come crying for mommy.

So is this “poaching” legal because it happened in open water? Certainly they have to traffic the animal somewhere that would fall under the same regulations against killing the animal.

“Meat doesn’t come from styrofoam packages” Nor do we still ride in buggys. Massive subsidies - CHECK ‘Cornhusker Kickback’ and “Louisiana Purchase type” deals by Japanese whaling fleet/owners - CHECK And MUCH more. Here’s a very meaty book on the subject. http://books.google.com/books?id=hJPRiQFhCFIC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_v2_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q=&f=false

There is no question that they intentionally sank their own boat, they ran it right into the front of the whaler, completely intentional.

How much longer before the ecoterrorists stage a suicide bombing run at one of the whalers (like the attack on the USS Cole)?

And there are ecoterrorists who do engage in bombings and arson and violent acts of sabotage.

It is OK to be on the side of the whales. It is OK to be against the Japs and Norwegians whaling when there is absolutely no need for it, even though some few whale species are no longer endangered. Whale products were long ago replaced by far more effective materials, and whale beef is hardly a vital product in anyone's economy.

IMHO,though, it is not OK to be on the side of the Sea Shepherds, who although they have definitely figured out how to treat and pay themselves very well indeed with 501 C-3 funds donated by like-minded leftists, are enviro-nazis of the worst sort.

Speaking of enviro-nazis, the real NAZIs were very Green-Minded. Their PR on the subject was just about identical to the crap these Sea Shepherd/Riverkeeper/Greenpeace etc. ad naus. people put out.

BTW, that black 50-knot Darth Vader trimaran was way cool. To be run over by a whale catcher would be very embarrassing. But no propblem. Stuart Mott will buy them another.

I don’t give a damn who supports it. As if he were somehow perfect and everything he did is a standard for all conservatives...
Screw hippies and kill the Whales! The Japanese should send a Navy ship to sink these bastard pirates.

Well said. I do not support whaling, and the fact that it's going on in the name of "research" is ridiculous. However, Sea Shepherd is a dangerous bunch of hucksters. I do not apologize for caring more about human lives than whale lives. I'm only thankful that no human lives have been lost because of any of Sea Shepherd's shenanigans so far (yes, I'm glad the crew of the Ady Gil was rescued.

And they're incompetent dangerous hucksters at that. If you've ever watched their show on Discovery Channel, you'll be amazed at just how inept they are and wonder if they've ever managed to "save" a single whale. And now they've wasted that beautiful cutting-edge boat that they didn't deserve.
