It's an interesting question being asked this morning thanks to Sally Quinn's column in today's Washington Post. The column begins reflecting on the revelation of a third uninvited guest who sneaked into November's state dinner and the ensuing mess this has cause the Secret Service and the White House. Quinn then turns the column to a discussion of the current White House power structure which leads to the inevitable Chicago connections, including White House social secretary Desirée Rogers and Chief-of-Staff Rahm Emanuel. It's a this point that Quinn drops this paragraph on us:
Emanuel, the most political animal in this town, also should understand that keeping Rogers on as social secretary reflects upon the president's judgment. It's possible that he has other considerations. Emanuel is said to have told people that the chief-of-staff role is an 18-month job and that he is considering a run for mayor of Chicago. And Rogers is a major social and political player in the Windy City.

Chicago is a political cesspool.
Why doesn’t the GOP go after Rahm like the dems did to Karl Rove...it seems like the perfect irony?

Daley Machine Sends Message to Obama
Oh, yeah, and then there’s the (Daley crown jewel) Chicago 0lympic debacle. Who is holding all that worthless real estate anyway?
Wait ....wait ....I know that one! It’s because they have no cojones!!
A freeper posted some months ago that the Daley Machine pales on comparison with the Rahm Machine. God help us.

In a statement:
“This is a wise choice by President-elect Obama.
“Rahm knows Capitol Hill and has great political skills. He can be a tough partisan but also understands the need to work together. He is well-suited for the position of White House Chief of Staff.
“I worked closely with him during the presidential debate negotiations which were completed in record time. When we hit a rough spot, he always looked for a path forward. I consider Rahm to be a friend and colleague. He’s tough but fair. Honest, direct, and candid. These qualities will serve President-elect Obama well.
“Rahm understands the challenges facing our nation and will, consistent with the agenda set by President-elect Obama, work to find common ground where it exists. I look forward to working with him in his new position and will continue to do everything I can to help find a pathway forward on the difficult problems facing our nation.”
**sigh**
I wouldn’t wish this on the people of Chicago, but at least he would be out of the cesspool of DC.
Sounds perfect to me! Go ahead and run Rham against the Daley machine...It’s gonna be better than WWE with 2 crooks and their machines flattening each other on the way to a win...I hope Rham wins - that way we get him out of Obama’s cabinet~
I wonder if that WaPo tidbit is a warning shot back at the Daley Machine. Rahm knows where the bodies are buried.
He IS chopped liver, but Rahm
in that position would be laughable.
Capone remnants vs Mossad/IDF vets? Hands down-RAHMBO WINS!!!
Actually, the more I think about it, I can't think of a more deserving city.
Except maybe Detroit.
I’ve got no use for Daley. His oafish public demeanor is an embarrassment and, in the long run, I think his tenure will be judged as a disaster for Chicago. But Rahm Emmanuel as mayor? I’d feel better if they just somehow raised Capone from the dead and made him mayor.
“I wonder if that WaPo tidbit is a warning shot back at the Daley Machine.”
It may also be a reply-threat (does Rahm know how to speak in any other way?) in answer to the Daley column of last week, in which the mayor’s brother urged the White House to clean up its act, lest the 2010 elections become a debacle in the manner of 1994...
You nailed it.
Both thug machines using the same mouthpiece, WaPo.
I listen to WLS every morning and I do believe that Daley is out now. I also believe that Jesse Jackson and his son both (who you don’t see at all anymore) are going down in the Blago wiretaps.
I just hope they have enough to go after Rahm and Obama if Daley or Blago take an immunity offer, I know it will never happen but it’s fun to daydream sometimes...
