Tuna hits highest price in nine years at Tokyo auction

A tuna has been sold at auction in Tokyo's fish market for 16.28 million yen ($175,000, £109,000), the highest price paid in Japan for nine years.

The bluefin tuna weighs 232 kg - nearly four times as much as the average Japanese man.

It was caught off the northern tip of Japan's main island of Honshu, in waters famed for high quality fish.

Tuna is prized in Japan, where people eat it raw in sushi, but there is concern that stocks are dwindling.

The record-breaking tuna was put on the block in the first auction of the new year at Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market.

The tuna was bought jointly by one of the city's most upmarket restaurants, and an entrepreneur from Hong Kong who runs a chain of sushi bars.

Last year a similar fish made less than 10 million yen.

Bluefin tuna is known as the king of sushi and the Japanese eat more of it than any other nation, according to the BBC's correspondent in Tokyo, Roland Buerk.

Conservationists are calling for a moratorium on fishing to save the bluefin tuna from extinction in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

Let me add, our 0 doesn’t like tuna, he prefers the swordfish.

Well, if someone wants to pay that much for a bluefin, more power to them. Peasant that I am, I’d rather have a nice plate of fried razor clams or grilled squid.

Or maybe some monkfish. Man, do I love monkfish...

Mr. Nazi Pelosi must be making out like a bandit.

It is my understanding that he owns a big chunk (pun intended) of Starkist. It is also my understanding that his operations are headquartered in American Samoa, and that his Rat wife obtained an exemption for workers there from the Federal Minimum Wage -- giving Mr. Nazi's company a significant competitive advantage over other American tuna processors/canneries -- not that there's anything wrong with this because as the above graphic explains, Rats are totally exempt from both ethics and MSM criticism.

A little OT, but in Japan they often get large sums for other foodstuffs at auctions:

My favorite lunch is one of those instant bowl of noodles heated up with hot water and a couple slices of cheese and then a can of white tuna packed in water. Less than a minute in the microwave and its a meal thats cheap, full of protein and won’t make me fat.

Monkfish, when simmered in Orange Kist, look and taste like lobster.

In fact it’s called poor man’s lobster.

Bluefin tuna is, really, delicious. I was treated to a banquet several years back where there were various bluefin dishes. One was like a braised steak that tasted like fork-tender beef filet.

Well, I’ve noticed that the price of canned tuna has gone up tremendously over the years, and the amount in the can has been going down.

Actually, while I love canned tuna, I’ve never felt the urge to try sushi or sashimi (around here, that’s known as “bait”), but I have had cooked tuna steaks a couple of times: Quite good.

But I have simpler tastes. A nice tuna melt on buttered, crispy rye bread, with some sharp cheddar cheese and fresh tomato. Or tuna casserole, with a crunchy crushed potato chip topping. Or just on some bread with Miracle Whip.

Mark
