New school's name to be a tribute to Laura Bush

The new middle school under construction in the Lubbock-Cooper Independent School District will be named after Laura Bush, the wife of former president George W. Bush.

The Lubbock-Cooper board of trustees cited her background as an educator, her commitment to education and literacy as first lady of Texas and the nation and her Texas roots as reasons for the naming.

Laura Bush conveyed to school district officials the honor she felt about the naming, and said she and her husband would like to attend the opening of Laura Welch Bush Middle School in August 2011 if their schedules allowed.

What great news! I will be glad when we name a school after
one of the Bushes here where I live in West Texas!
