It’s been years, but the last time I was in the Detroit airport, it was a dump. Maybe the good citizens finally fixed it up.

It's gloriously fixed up. The crummy little Smith terminal building was finally reduced to the pile of rubble into which it had been slowly descending for years, and a beautiful mile-long terminal building, complete with a tram system, was constructed to replace it.

Wow! That new facility looks a lot better than the old. What I remember most about the old airport was the lack of signage. On my last trip, I was trying to find baggage claim. Followed the signs so far; then all of a sudden the sign for baggage claim disappeared. Even worse, I had to ask two different people before I could find my way. The first one spoke English as a second language; the second did point me in the right direction. This person told me it wasn’t my fault; apparently, the airport was undergoing some renovation and had not replaced some of the signs. I guess baggage claims was one of them.
