Former Washington Post ombudsman Deborah Howell, one of the first women to lead a major U.S. newspaper, died in an accident involving an automobile in New Zealand on Saturday, according to her family. She was 68.
Howell was traveling in New Zealand on vacation with her husband, C. Peter Magrath, at the time of the accident. Her stepson Nick Coleman said Howell suffered fatal injuries when struck by a vehicle. She lived in Glen Echo.

Howell wrote in her first ombudsman column for The Post, in October 2005, "My values simply are these: Journalism should be as accurate as human beings can make it and it should be enlightening, fair, honest and as transparent as possible. Mistakes should be acknowledged and quickly corrected. When you finish reading The Post, you should feel more informed than when you began. I truly believe a democracy can't operate without a free press. But I also can't live without 'Doonesbury' or 'Opus' on Sunday." This shows that the editors of Wa Po obviously did not like her ...
And she was right about Opus (Bloom County) ...

headline lies right to the end.
“dies” is a lie by ommision. “was killed” is more accurate.
Story doesn’t say if it was hit & run or if the driver stopped & is helping police. That is a rather KEY piece of information.
