“Who was more beautiful than Katherine Hepburn in her 80’s?”

True, and I can sincerely see the beauty in many older women. But it is simply silly for authors like this Boston Globe columnist to stamp their feet over the fact that, by and large, men are going to prefer younger, nubile women in leading lady parts.

I suppose that talent might be a big discriminator. Those “older” actresses with talent (Glenn Close or Meryl Streep) seem to have NO problem finding acting jobs. And they tend to DELIVER a fine performance. The younger actresses seem to believe all the hype about being so beautiful and talented. Most times they are neither, just the right actress for that “great” role they were seen in.
As they get older, the attitude tends to keep producers and/or directors from hiring them. Feminists ideals, the idea that they need 4-5 new boyfriends a year, and the constant dieting and exercise to stay 40 pounds under a healthy weight probably help them age faster too.
Getting old can be a B****, but then you wake up and realize the alternative isn’t all that good.
