Video at the link.
I understand where you’re going with this. A savior is desirable, but not available. Cromwell no doubt had his faults as do all men and anyone capable of acting as Cromwell did would be found “lacking” in short order. It doesn’t matter though, because there is no such person available. It will be up to the people to dissolve the corrupt “parliament” this land has spawned. But, there will be leaders among the people as there always is. Some are already present, are not yet aware of their missions but will stand up when the time arrives.
The current system has already become tyrannical in it's own right.
Watch the clip, was only referring to his speech and actions therein, not his entire life.
Agreed.
Cromwell was so “loved” they dug up his corpse from Westminster Abbey and strung it up. I do not believe people know where Cromwell’s body in even today.
Didn't know Austro-Hungary had a dreadnought so looked it up. Only three battleships were ever filmed sinking. The Szent Istvan was one: Video
You won't find many Irish Catholics or many monarchists, for that matter, who have anything good to say for him. He pretty nearly conducted a genocide in Ireland, and he signed the King's (unconstitutional and illegal) death warrant.
That's King Charles the Martyr, a semi-saint since the Anglicans have no provision for canonization.
But the dissolving of the Long Parliament was perhaps his finest hour.
"You have sate too long for any good you have been doing ... Depart, I say; and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!"
This is all that's left of him (nobody knows where the rest of him is):
And that's what I'm referring to here.
Head fell off Temple Bar in the 1680s and passed through various hands before being buried at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, in the 1960s.
Thanks.
We get the chance to do that every two years. If the public is too stupid to use that power, well.....
The rest of us have to pay for that stupidity.
And that's what I'm referring to here.
I know, that's why I mentioned it. As Kipling has one of his characters say in Rewards and Fairies, "High time Oliver came to purge the land!"
But he's got way too much other baggage.
Pardon me, but you made a serious historical error
Stop and think why Cromwell invaded in the first place
A lot of that reason was the Slaughter of Northern Irish protestants, the GENOCIDE of Protestants if you will
Cromwell prevented that from being sucessful.
Dont expect me to feel sorry for the losers who tried to kill my family.
If you want to applaud the slaughter of Protestants and then decry the Protestants fighting back with a hero who saved their lives, then maybe your sensibilities are crossed somewhere.
Cromwell and the Protestants didn’t start that fight, not by a longshot.
I was disappointed at the film when they left our the finest ass-chewing I have ever read. It fully applies to the bunch in Congress today:
In the name of God, Go, April 20, 1653
It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonoured by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice; ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government; ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money;
Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess? Ye have no more religion than my horse; gold is your God; which of you have not barterd your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?
Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defild this sacred place, and turnd the Lords temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices? Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation; you were deputed here by the people to get grievances redressd, are yourselves become the greatest grievance. Your country therefore calls upon me to cleanse this Augean stable, by putting a final period to your iniquitous proceedings in this House; and which by Gods help, and the strength he has given me, I am now come to do;
I command ye therefore, upon the peril of your lives, to depart immediately out of this place; go, get you out! Make haste! Ye venal slaves be gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there (Parliamentary Staff), and lock up the doors. In the name of God, go!
Cromwell was an Anglican. Puritanism was the Fundamentalists of the day and most of them were persecuted by the Anglicans in England, too
Anglican persecution of Puritans is what caused the Pilgrims to sail to the US in the first place. :)
My family were Baptists in Ireland, they were hunted by Catholics, persecuted by Protestants and fled to Canada in the early 1800’s.
My Dad’s side was here by the early 1600’s, most likely puritan English from what I read in their diaries
It fell down in a storm at the end of James II's reign and that's when it began its long journey from closet to drawing room to iron bound box that ended at Sidney Sussex College.
True, but it all comes down into WHO STARTED the fight.
It wasn’t Cromwell. And the people who started the fight wiped out a lot of families for decades before Cromwell showed up.
