NEW YORK (Reuters) – New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg pledged on Friday to promote a more open U.S. immigration policy during his third term, much as he made a campaign against illegal guns a hallmark of his second term.

"With leaders from across the country, we will assemble a bipartisan coalition to support President Obama's call for comprehensive immigration reform that honors our history, upholds our values, and promotes our economy," Bloomberg said upon being sworn in for his third term as mayor.

The White House has said it will aim for immigration reform in 2010, possibly including a path to citizenship for the 12 million immigrants who live in the country illegally.

Bloomberg, who considered running for president in 2008 as a political independent, raised his national profile by assembling a coalition of 500 U.S. mayors who banded together in a campaign against illegal guns.

On the hot-button issue of immigration, he favors more liberal laws on allowing immigrants into the country and legalizing those who lack documentation. That will draw opposition from advocates of tightening the border and deportation of illegal aliens.

"We're committing what I call national suicide," Bloomberg said on the NBC's "Meet the Press" last Sunday. "Somehow or other, after 9/11 we went from reaching out and trying to get the best and the brightest to come here, to trying to keep them out...

“Is there any doubt the traitors are now in charge?”

What do you mean “now”? They’ve been in charge for quite some time.

Were it in my power to force ideologues like Bloomberg and half the politicians and judges in this country to live in the neighborhoods they’re turning into third world hellholes. Being politicians, they of course benefit from it. God, how sick to bleeding gum’s death I am of the modern American political class.

Will someone please tell Mayor Bloomberg that the Mayor of New York doesn't control US Immigration Policy. This is a Federal responsibility. The man is crazy and totally out of control. What a megalomaniac.

I don’t know whether to call him an idiot, imbecile or moron, but his is either very stupid, an unmitigated liar, uninformed, corrupt or a combination of those.

I’ve been a regular at local congressional town hall meetings for a few dozen years and noted that starting around 10 years ago, the majority of those there were angry that nothing was being done about the illegal invasion. Why are we still waiting for the clowns in Malfunction Junction – who can produce convoluted legislative proposals to line their pockets or deliver pork back home and ram it through in the dark of night – to secure our national borders?

If we had more citizens like you, this country would be a much better place.

My congressman is strongly against amnesty. I'm not sure what to think about my 2 Texas senators. Cornyn seemed to be strongly against amnesty in 2007 (before the 2008 election), but lately he has been making strange statements:

August 10, 2009 - "It's important that immigration legislation protects our borders, promotes economic prosperity in Texas and throughout the United States, and is consistent with our American values of compassion, family, and opportunity," Cornyn declared. "I urge President Obama to reconsider his decision and put immigration reform back on his priority list."

What the hell kind of "immigration reform" does he think we are going to get from Pelosi/Reid/Obama? I called his office and they said he was really against amnesty. If the Dems take up his dare and try to push immigration this yesr, I hope he has his head on straight.
