THERE ARE times when one reads an article of such magnitude it causes utter disbelief; and rereading the piece only exacerbates the feeling.
That was certainly how I felt when I read that the sister of Lovelle Mixon the assailant who killed four Oakland police officers before he, too, was killed by police seeks compensation from the city because of injuries she and her grandmother sustained during the gunbattle that ensued in her apartment where Mixon was hiding after he had already killed two officers.
It is alleged that as Mixon hid in the apartment, the sister and grandmother were wounded by a stun grenade and subjected to hours of mistreatment by police after Mixon was killed. She seeks more than $10,000, less the 33 percent usually reserved for attorney fees.
Since I am not an attorney nor was I on the scene on March 21 as five individuals died by gunfire in East Oakland, I have no idea if there is legal standing for the claim.
But in the court of public opinion, it is the height of absurdity to think someone could be compensated as a result of one of the city's tragic events of 2009, if not its history. I trust there is not a groundswell of people who see this claim as anything more than a travesty void of any humor and guilty of bad taste and timing.

If they weren’t aiding and abetting, and if the police did not follow legal procedure, then they have a legitimate claim for damages.
If the police followed procedure, then it’s an insurance issue.
So much for fairness. On the other hand, if there was one single hair’s worth of indication that they helped that murderous bastard fire through the wall to murder the cops in the hallway, they should be thrown in jail and counter-sued by the city.
She was hurt committing a crime so doesn’t deserve squat on our dime. But this is California and no telling what will happen. The city should turn around and sue her and the grandmother.
Oakland will settle because, “It’s cheaper to settle and make it go away than fight!”
Yep, they hid a criminal. They should have been charged with harboring.
I’m a victim.
You too? Same here.
Stranger things have happened in civil courts. Long, long time ago in the 70’s I think, two officers in Alton shot an armed suspect who had just robbed a store. He didn’t die, but was a quadriplegic as a result of his wounds. The family sued the city, the officers, and the store he robbed. They won a multi-million dollar settlement that also caused the police to be much more discriminating in their decision to fire on even armed suspects. It was a sad, sad day.
Well paulycy, now we need to find something rich to sue for making us victims.
Now I'm victimized yet again by the failure of someone rich to make themselves my big fat lawsuit target...
Oakland is a far leftist created Utopian fantasy city. It is, in it's entirety, a sick joke on civilization. Richmond is the same and San Francisco not far behind.
A real shame what happened to the U.S.S. Catfish 339
Faulklands war,.
It’s likely that the government provides for her every single other need so why shouldn’t she expect it to take care of this one? Scum.
Whatever...just pay her claim and then deduct it right back from her welfare benefits...;-) Oh, and disbar the lawyer that brought the suit to court. Win-win.
