I quess the purpose of this church is to raise $900,000.
A spokeswoman for Warren said the church does not release financial details,
Every church I've ever been in, those details are endlessly hashed out in bi-annual congregational meetings. What kind of organization does Saddleback have, that this is not available?
cough up $900,000 before Jan. 1 to keep the parish out of the red.I don't think you can call his church a "parish".
Probably not. You expect secular media to get those kind of details right? Unless the reporter itself is religious, expect a tin ear.
250 miles round trip?! You can't find a local church?
A couple freeway hours each way -- probably just an everyday drive in SoCalifornopolis.
It could be very enlightening to see the expense side of their ledger.
"Growth" to the local "megachurches" seems to be all about budgets, headcount and moving to bigger and better buildings. Splitting off to start a new gathering when their existing building nears capacity must be against their religion.
Too Big to fail
Ever heard of worshiping and serving in a LOCAL church?
You sure do.
You worship Hamlet? Wow! I know it's a great play and everything, but that might be taking it a bit too far...
BTW, that's a quote from Polonius... the buffoon in the play. In fact, the entire purpose of that speech was to show the audience what a goof-ball Polonius was (after telling his son to do all of these things to influence what others think of him, he finishes up by telling his son "to thine own self be true."). If you're going to quote the "wisdom" of a character from Hamlet, quoting one of the clowns is probably not your best bet...
You are right about the quote from Hamlet. We tend to pick up our quotes of wisdom from others. But, I am sure you know, many quotes of wisdom (just like this one) find their origin in the bible.
There is no commandment saying Do not borrow or lend!
But, the wisdom of not borrowing and lending is a bible truth. Shakespeare (if you’re familiar with his work) must have been a serious student of the bible.
As for “To thine own self be true”, I find that to be one of the wisest instructions anyone could give. Your take on it is strange to me.
Now, for a little trivia...I read that Shakespeare’s works are second in all time bestsellers next to the bible.
Given by Polonius after loads of advice meant to convince someone (his son, Laertes) to change their appearance ("costly thy habit..."), their behavior ("give no man thy thoughts"), and their personal relationships ("dull not thy palm with every new-hatched courage"), it is a humorous contradiction meant to suggest that the speaker doesn't understand his own advice. Wonderful characterization... that's why Shakespeare was a genius.
But, the wisdom of not borrowing and lending is a bible truth.
Actually, the Bible is very big on lending... and giving for that matter. The only thing it frowns upon is lending for interest, a practice known to them as "usury." Otherwise, lending is, in fact, encouraged by the early church. Giving was, of course, much better...
I read of two foundations he and his wife set up and gave to where they are paid employees.
We have attended churches locally but I didn't get the same inspirational teaching as we get at Saddleback.
The work that Saddleback does locally and thur out the world is why we choose to drive 250 miles to worship.
I invite anyone within driving distance to come worship with us at Saddleback, or watch a service on-line.
Saddleback members give so much to the local community.
If someone needs a car donated cars are given at NO cost to them. Need food just ask the food panty.
Toy's for kids for Christmas how about several 18 wheelers full.
When you are buddies with Obortion Obama, people withold the tithes.
Sorry!
Who Knew What When?
Rick Warren gave Obama an advance look at some of the questions.
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/18/who-knew-what-when/
That’s got to be part of it.
Gee, if Rick makes $2,000,000 a year he could give 90% to Saddleback and still clear more than most pepole in this country.
That is an outright lie.
"Do you give 90% of your income to your church?"
No, and neither does Rick Warren. It is proven from many sources.
Good thing that Joel Osteen isn't a bit closer!
I had heard about this guy but never had seen him. Then I saw that debate he moderated - actually 2 interviews, one with Obama and one with McCain.
My reaction was “I wouldn’t buy a used car from this guy.”
