Hasn’t he had back pain for a while? I want to say that I heard he wouldn’t get an operation for it because they would have to go in through the throat and it could effect his vocal chords. Does this ring any bells for anyone?

Yes. Rush said there was only a minute chance that there would be any damage to his vocal chords, but since they are involved in his livelihood, he was not willing to take that chance.

Yes, when he came back from rehab, he had neck issues, and would have moved his vocal cords, to repair his neck.

You are correct. It is just that since rehab he had learned how to cope with the back pain without drugs. So when all of a sudden he was complaining how much back pain he was having it just seemed odd. That is why I think it was more then just his back, but he didn't realize it was more.
