Gilmore chosen CEO of Alexandria think tank

Former Gov. Jim Gilmore has been elected president and chief executive officer of the Alexandria-based Free Congress Foundation, a think tank that seeks to promote conservative policies in Washington.

The late Paul Weyrich, an historic figure in the conservative movement, founded the organization more than 30 years ago.

Though it bills itself as nonpartisan, the studies that the group published over the past year, on such issues as global warming, stem-cell research, health-care overhaul and the Nobel Peace Prize, have a decidedly anti-Obama slant.

In a letter seeking money for the organization, Gilmore said “our goal will go beyond solely moving the debate in the right direction. We need to move the country in the right direction.”

Reached at his Henrico County home, Gilmore said he no longer practices law and plans to devote most of his time to the group. He will also continue to serve on four corporate boards.

Gilmore was governor from 1998 to 2002. He was chairman of the Republican National Committee for 10 months in 2000-2001. In 2007, he explored seeking the Republican nomination to run for president, but dropped out due to lack of support.

Dear Friends of the Free Congress Foundation:

The Board of Directors of the Free Congress Foundation recently appointed
me to serve as the new President and CEO of the Foundation. This e-mail is
to inform you know that I plan to keep in touch, and work with you to
further conservative problem solving for the United States. This is an
important moment for the nation, and the Free Congress Foundation must be
a voice in current public policy discussions.

For those of you who do not know me, I am the former Governor of
Virginia, serving the Commonwealth from 1998-2002. I served as Attorney
General of Virginia, the elected prosecutor of my home county, and former
Chairman of the Republican Committee. As Governor, I chaired bi-partisan
commissions on Terrorism and on Internet Taxation Policy. I am a veteran
of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany in the Army Intelligence. I am
a life-long conservative who applied conservative principles to governing in
elective office. Also, I serve on the national Board of Directors of the
National Rifle Association. I have attached my curriculum vitae and a
recent article published in the Washington Times announcing my recent
appointment.

I follow in the footsteps of Paul M. Weyrich, but no one can replace him.
His death is a loss for conservatives everywhere, but our best tribute to Paul
is to make the Free Congress Foundation a thought leader, addressing the
challenges and concerns facing the people of the United States in these
difficult times. Conservatism is not partisan, and we should seek support for
our ideas in both parties. We must offer positive solutions from the
conservative point of view, offer new ideas on the crucial issues of the day,
especially on government control, high spending and debt, and inevitable
higher taxes that reduce the people’s power over their own lives. It is
critical that we address foreign policy and national security issues as those
challenges continue to emerge and continue our efforts to nationalize our
economy though cap and trade legislation. We must advocate American
values, as has been the traditional role of the Free Congress Foundation.

To carry out this mission I will need your help. We must begin to build a
grass-roots financial support network. Many of you have followed the work
of the Free Congress Foundation in developing policy and ideas to help this
country. There has never been a more important time in America for our
organization. Please go to our web site: www.freecongress.org, and donate
to our foundation or send us a check to our headquarters: 1423 Powhatan
Street #2, Alexandria, Virginia 22314. You donation is tax-deductable.
Your donation is urgently needed to pay for our programs and the good
thinkers who would like to work with us to carry out our program and
mission. Please take action now to give us a tax-deductable donation.

The liberals who control our government seek to change the character of the
nation, itself. I assure you that there are better days ahead. With your help
we will build a better future for ourselves and our children.

Have a very Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays.

James S. Gilmore III

A solidly conservative organization. I relied heavily on them for educational materials twenty years ago before the Heritage Foundation became more prominent.

Yes.

I was very pleased to see N.E.T. TV come on.

Good stuff.

I wrote a few commentaries and had them published on FreeCongress.org

Paul Weyrich was a gentleman and a solid conservative.

I’m no Jim Gilmore fan. But this is a good fit for him and for Free Congress.
