Actually the British Empire for much of its existence did more good then harm. If it was not for British influence here we would be a mish-mash of squabbling caudillo-staes like Latin America.
Much of this past “Ideal Age” that many Libertarians & Paulists’s point to as an example of how the USA should conduct its foreign policy was only made possible by the Royal Navy (Hence the British Empire!). This navy's actions which only protected us by default not by design enabled the USA in our early days to establish our governing institutions & traditions. Thanks the Brits protecting their imperial interests we inadvertently benefited because very few countries were able to interfere directly & effectively in our internal affairs. I think Africa & Middle East would have greatly benefited by another generation or two of British (even other European) control. Oh yeah I have Irish ancestry so I am well aware of British behavior in Ireland. That still doesn't change any of my above statements because I think they have good historical support.
