A global search for accomplices in the Detroit airliner plot was under way yesterday after an al-Qaeda group based in Yemen claimed responsibility for the operation and the would-be bomber was reported to have said that more attacks were being planned.
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a terrorist cell led by a former personal secretary to Osama bin Laden, issued a statement saying that the failed attack by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was a response to American-backed airstrikes on the group in Yemen this month.
Yemeni government forces, acting on US intelligence and using what officials have admitted was American military hardware, launched air raids on suspected militants in the east of the country on December 17 and again on December 24. At least 60 people were understood to have been killed.
Mr Abdulmutallab, the 23-year-old Nigerian who set himself alight in a packed Airbus approaching Detroit on Christmas Day, bought his one-way ticket from a KLM office in Accra, the Ghanaian capital, on December 16, indicating that his attack was planned well before these latest air raids. A US military effort to deny al-Qaeda a stronghold in Yemen has been under way for at least a year.
The fresh-faced engineering graduate was transferred yesterday from hospital in Detroit to a federal prison in Milan, Michigan, where agents questioning him said he told them that he was one of many bombers being groomed by the Yemeni alQaeda affiliate to attack American-bound aircraft, according to ABC News.

Statement Regarding Disturbance on Aircraft Bound for Salt Lake City
On Sunday, December 27, 2009, a special agent with the Salt Lake City FBI Field Office responded to the Salt Lake International Airport. There was a report of a disturbance on board a flight from Seattle to Salt Lake City. After the flight landed, the special agent interviewed the passenger who was accused of the disruption. Due to media inquires about this incident, the FBI wants the public to know there does not appear to be any connection to terrorism. There were no reports of any injuries to passengers or crew members. The individual is not in federal custody. The case will be reviewed by the United States Attorneys Office for the District of Utah to determine if any charges will be filed. At this time, the investigation is ongoing and therefore the FBI can not make any further comment.
I will tell you this. We planned to fly to Orlando the first week of December 2010 to go to the new Harry Potter World at Islands of Adventure.
There is no freakin’ way I’m putting my kids on a plane.
We will pull the camper and do a longer trip. I’ll be damned if I trust this administration to keep my girls from being blown up.
Well, that’s it, then. No more Muslims on planes.
Enjoy your trip with your girls, netmilsmom.
Do what you think best.
Thanks!
Flying is really quicker, but this just scared me.
Well, in the famous words...bring it on. If the Air Marshalls don’t get them, we will start hearing of public mid-air lynchings soon.
This really scares me as I live directly under the approach to Laguardia. Sometimes they fly so low my mother used to say they wanted to come in for coffee. One idiot like this and they can wipe out thousands in the immediate area, not to mention the people on the plane.
It’s finally coming to pass. We are being attacked in our homeland and our fearless leader is playing golf.
I miss GWB.
But Napo assured us this attempt was NOT part of any organized terrorist activity.
Good decision. Flying is and has been risky for some time, not to mention having to put all the TSA junk. Who needs it?
This is why I refuse to get onto an airplane anymore.
The TSA would sooner target white Christians for extra searches before they screen black muslims.
