A toddler who authorities said was possibly given too much morphine during a dental procedure died Sunday night.
According to the Bexar County medical examiner's office, Maddoux Cordova was pronounced dead at 7 p.m. at Wilford Hall Medical Center, where he had been treated for about two weeks after complications arose from the Dec. 11 dental procedure.
Mark Stinnett, attorney for Maddoux's dentist, said the procedure took place at an outpatient surgical facility. An anesthesiologist administered his medication, Stinnett said.
The 22-month-old was being treated for a decaying tooth, family members said. According to a spokeswoman for the San Antonio Police Department, his grandmother called 911 around 2:15 p.m. on Dec. 11, just hours after his procedure, to report he wasn't breathing.
He was then hospitalized until Sunday, when family members decided to remove him from life support, relatives said.

That’s really sad. But it does bring up a question in my mind - why is a toddler getting dental procedures? I’ve never heard of that. I thought they still had baby teeth...??? Somebody fill me in.....
This MIGHT become a larger issue with adults. My fiancee’s late ex-husband was a big time pain pill junky. Apparently there were numerous times where he would go in for surgery and the normal dosage of anesthetic didn’t work to keep him down. He actually woke up in the middle of a procedure begging for more anesthetic, and when they were bringing him out of it in post-op, he actually fought to stay under “for the high.”
For those of us under a rock, apparently the recreational use of pain medication is a burgeoning industry with meds like Vicodin and Percocet fetching anywhere from $50 - $200 A PILL on the streets.
My own brother, three years my junior, is an on-again-off-again pill user, and he’s thrice stolen from our mother for drug money and pawned most of his valuables for a fix. This article may be dealing with a child, but the dumbed down, doped up masses are crying for more fixes with Obama prescribing “a pill for all that ails you!”
Wonder about the accuracy of the report. I doubt an anesthesiologist would use morphine for the procedure when there are far better drugs to use for pain and sedation in a kid like Fentanyl and Propafol, both of which have far quicker onset and shorter duration then morphine.
Because he had dental problems, presumably.
My son had 5 caps on his teeth at age 20 months. The enamel was weak or just not there.

I know of lots of kids (via parents blogs/forums, etc.) that’ve had major dental work at young ages because of cavities. Could be b/c the kids teeth are just weak and decay easily. Could be b/c they had a habit of leaving the baby with a bottle in bed. Or from too much juice in the diet.
Gotta fill them even if they will fall out, in order to protect the gums.
Reminds me. My 3 year old is about 3 months overdue for a check up.
My oldest had 4 rotted baby teeth when he was under 5. All 4 were pulled because there was a risk of infection. They were rotted to the gum line from “milk mouth”. The next 2 did not get bottles of milk at night. :-)

22 months old? Decaying tooth? WTF? None of this makes sense...the tooth was probably in his mouth for what? 5 months? 8 months? SURGERY?!?!?

I know nothing about this poor family. But assume they are uninsured.
I believe this poor kid has set the standard for what Obama-care will soon be for all of us.

There are severals things that can cause that. Being put to bed with a bottle of milk all of the time, being given sugery drinks all of the time can do it, and many medications can also cause tooth decay young.
I believe you, but I personally don't see the appeal. I have some Vicodin that I have on hand for occasional severe GI pain. It works, but I don't think I could get addicted to it--the side effects are too unpleasant. The stuff makes me itch like crazy and feel like a zombie, so I don't take anymore than I absolutely have to. The doctor says the itching is not an allegeric reaction in my case, just a fairly common side effect of the drug. Percocet does the same thing to me, but worse.

Terrible tragedy but this story does not ring true on soooo many points.
My guess is the boy aspirated on some food or candy given to him as a treat for being so brave.
WTF is a dentist administering MORPHINE to a child? I would think a local and another form of pain relief would be standard.
Yes, it is an Air Force hospital and works with the city of San Antonio as a trauma center required to treat military and civilians. Believe that Brooke Army Medical Center does the same. Also believe they are reimbursed by someone for all treatment
Or, why would he have morphine instead of a local like novacaine?
