US lawmakers favour full body scan at airports

WASHINGTON: US lawmakers favoured a compulsory full body scan of the passengers of all US-bound international flights so as to avoid the incident of a Nigerian national sneaking inside the plane with explosives.

"I would say right now we do need full body scan, especially when you have countries like Nigeria, which have inadequate security, and you have passengers transiting in Amsterdam and coming here," Congressman Peter King told CBS news in an interview.

"There is a brief violation of privacy with the full body scan, but on the other hand we can save thousands of lives," said King, a Republican Congressman, who is a Ranking Member of the House Committee of Homeland Security.

Senator Joe Lieberman, Chairman of Senate Committee on Homeland Security, strongly favoured full body scan.

"Three hundred people could have been killed and untold more on the ground in Michigan if this plane had crashed," Lieberman said referring to the explosive used by the Nigerian al-Qaida suspect in his attempt to blow up a US passenger plane on Christmas day.

"There have been privacy concerns expressed about the use of these whole body imaging devices, but I think those privacy concerns, have to fall in the face of the ability of these machines to detect material like this, explosive on this individual," he told Fox News in an interview.

And the next guy will have a pound of it up the rump through security.

Profile the person, not the weapon.

The only people doing the killings - the ONLY people taking down airplanes are MUSLIMS. And they are the ONLY people who should have full body scans every times they get on a plane.

We have to get over "PC" or thousands of innocent Americans will die in airplane crashes.

Oh cut it, will you. He got on the plane despite the no-fly list and his father warned you of what was happening.

This is indicative of the Obama presidency that recklessly disbelieves that there are terrorists under islam who want to kill Americans and destroy America.

In my opinion, this is already grounds for impeachment!!!

Hey, I'm a big fan of individual self-determination. If our congress-critters and senators want to undergo full body scans at airports that's fine with me; as long as they don't try to force such thngs on ME!

Let’s try a 100% exclusion of Islamo-Fascists on US carriers and any flight that originates from outside the Country.

This is why orifice searches will be necessary. After all, 'There is a brief violation of privacy , but on the other hand we can save thousands of lives'

It will be interesting to hear the howls of outrage from the civil libertarians who shrieked at every move Bush made.

Or will the silence be deafening, since this is an Obama idea?

Stay tuned.

Heard over the weekend he had no passport (I haven’t been keeping up with the updates each day though).

Yes. He should never have been onboard the flight.

But political correctness is killing this nation.

The politicians have already exempted themselves.

AS IF the politicians pose no continued threats to the security of this nation.

We can implement all types of measures to prevent terrorists from boarding planes. They learn, they adapt, they escalate. There are other methods of terrorist acts, not just airplanes. Destroy the source. We will continue to attempt to install preventative measures much to the inconvenience and expense of the innocent. We are at war, we need to act like we are at war.

I went through one of these machines in Salt Lake. I had to remove everything from my pockets and hold my wallet over my head. Afterward, I did get some applause and thumbs up from the TSA. Athough, I did get accused of smuggling a salami.
