Mexico weighs options as lawlessness continues to grip Ciudad Juarez
Washington Post ^ | Dec. 27, 2009 | William Booth and Steve Fainaru

CIUDAD JUAREZ, MEXICO -- Senior Mexican officials have begun a sweeping review of the military's two-year occupation of this dangerous border city, concluding that the U.S.-backed deployment of thousands of soldiers against drug traffickers has failed to control the violence and crime, according to officials in both countries.

The multi-agency review, which has not been made public, represents a "serious reassessment" of President Felipe Calderón's anti-narcotics strategy and reflects growing alarm that Juarez, across from El Paso, has descended into lawlessness, U.S. officials familiar with the process said.

The war on Mexico's powerful drug cartels has been the defining policy of Calderón's administration, involving unprecedented cooperation with American political and law enforcement authorities. Failure in a high-profile battleground such as Ciudad Juarez would represent a major defeat for Calderón and for U.S. officials ...

"There is an almost unanimous consensus in the city that the strategy hasn't worked," said Hugo Almada, "The most terrifying question that everyone asks is, 'If the army comes in and can't control the situation, what happens to us now?' "

The city estimates that the violence has created 7,000 orphans and displaced 100,000 people, many of whom have fled across the Rio Grande to Texas. Most of the members of the business and political elite of Juarez, including the mayor, now either sleep or maintain a second home in El Paso. The chief human rights advocate also retreated across the river.

Part of our Christmas entertainment is a rerun of the Latin Grammy 2009 show ~ This features the Song of the Year "Aquí Estoy Yo" — Claudia Brant, Luis Fonsi and Gen Reuben, songwriters (Luis Fonsi featuring Aleks Syntek, Noel Schajris and David Bisbal)

Great stuff.

Of note the awards took place in LAS VEGAS NV.

They know!

Someone mentioned the other day on the forum that most of Mexico’s elite are residing here in the states. I’d heard that former pres Fox, among others has a home in McCallen, Tx.

“Most of the members of the business and political elite of Juarez, including the mayor, now either sleep or maintain a second home in El Paso. The chief human rights advocate also retreated across the river. “

You can add Tijuana to that list. Most of the larger business owners in TJ stay in San Diego and only go to TJ when necessary, and then without notice.
A business associate who lives in TJ travels to the US daily to do business with his Mexican customers. The risk of kidnap or murder is just too high for the big guys to stick around.
We got big trouble in all these river cities.
Right now, all N. Mexico and Baha immigrants must go to Juarez to be interviewed by US Immigration. We make them go to a town that is nearly lawless. Go figure.

Look at your population vs murders in any state/city in the US. It is the same here for the same reasons just different nationalities of the perps.

Some parts of Detroit are returning to nature (scrub brush and undergrowth taking over) while our border area is a wild west anarchy.

Celebrate diversity. There’s nothing else left to celebrate.
