CHICO
Changes in the curriculum at Crosspoint Academy have some parents, including prominent radio host Delilah Rene Luke, concerned the private Christian school in Chico is straying from its biblical focus.
But school leaders defend the changes, saying the new materials will grow the schools 290 students into the next generation of Christian leaders.
The idea that Crosspoint is still fundamentally rooted in strong Christian values and delivers a curriculum with a Christian perspective in mind has not changed and that has never changed in this process, said Eric Rasmussen, superintendent of schools for Crista, the Christian ministry organization that owns Crosspoint.
The school, formerly known as Kings West, announced this fall that it had a new plan for a curriculum focused on leadership and on five pillars: critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, contemplation and cultural competency. Much of the work has been based on The Leader In Me, a program for students from Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
The emphasis on Coveys work is what most concerns Delilah. She recently disenrolled three of her children from Crosspoint.
I would like to say that I am merely deeply concerned about a recent addition to the schools teaching philosophy, but instead, I am forced to admit I am actually HORRIFIED by the recent addition of a book by Mormon author Steven (sic) Covey, she wrote in a Nov. 24 open letter to Crosspoint parents.
Further, she wrote that she believes in freedom of religion and does not object to Mormon beliefs or the yoga-type, Eastern religion activities Covey advocates. She said in a recent interview, however, that the materials dont belong in a Christian school.
Its not about being intolerant. Its about being true to my faith, she said. I dont have a problem with Stephen Covey and businesses that use it. I dont have any problem with people who want to sign up for yoga classes or attend the church of Satan if they want to. Thats their right. But I cant imagine someone paying money to send their kids to Brigham Young University so they can get a good basis in Mormon faith and then having their kid come home and saying his new teacher was a Catholic priest teaching the Apocrypha.
After her letter circulated, Delilah held an informational meeting in Port Orchard for Crosspoint parents. About 30 attended. She also received many supportive e-mails. But the parents contacted by e-mail by the Kitsap Sun about the controversy either declined to be interviewed or did not respond.
Covey has denied in recent years that his leadership materials are repackaged Mormonism. But Delilah is concerned that the leadership materials introduce Mormon tenets in a way that is palatable to non-Mormons.
He intends to indoctrinate the world with his theology by wiring it in a way that people can accept, she said.
Delilah questioned whether Crista and Crosspoint leaders were aware of Coveys beliefs before they adopted the materials. But Rasmussen said the bigger question is whether Crista schools only take materials from Christian publishers. The schools draw from a wide variety of materials and we will continue to seek and find the best resources and put them in the hands of outstanding Christian educators, he added.
Additionally, Rasmussen said teaching at Crosspoint goes well beyond The Leader In Me to focus on the five pillars. For example, he said, the core value of contemplation means to be people of reflection.
From a Christian standpoint, that means kids would meditate on their faith and the significance of biblical truth in their life, or they would read and think contemplatively about great literature.
We believe leaders do these core things, that kids should be contemplative in life and think about next step, about what God has in store and in place for them.
Delilah said smaller issues have led her to believe Crosspoint is trying to rebrand itself to attract families familiar and comfortable with Covey, but not perhaps with Christianity. A plaque with the Ten Commandments was recently moved from a prominent spot in the schools main hallway to a not-so-prominent classroom. A Seven Habits poster advocating meditation was put up at Crosspoint, with a Bible verse taped to it as if to make Eastern religion acceptable to the Christian, Delilah wrote in her Nov. 24 letter.
They even changed the schools name to take the Lords name out, she said.
Further, school leaders did not properly inform parents of the changes until the beginning of this school year, giving them little time to understand or react, she said.
But Rasmussen said the schools changes are not about rebranding, rather its trying to improve on past success in academics and extracurriculars.
Were thrilled in terms of where were going and moving forward to make this great school better to be really intentionally focused, he said. We see the need in terms of this world for good intentional Christian leaders who will lead in their churches and their communities and their homes.
Got any evidence of this?
John 6 28. Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?" |
Galatians 3 1. You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. |

Oh oh!
Now them MORMONs will likely lump you together with them OTHER Episcopalians: know what I mean?
We listen to her show often at night in the car and usually have the radio on for our daughter in her room when she goes to sleep to her show. Delilah is good people.
You'll find that many folks tend to think that posting SCRIPTURE that directly address the ANTI-biblical nature of what they believe is bashing.
I've yet to find any Christians, when presented MORMON 'scripture' to address a certain point; EVER complain that they've been BASHED.
When a MORMON ‘principal’, that cannot be defended pops up, it seems that an INDIVIDUAL on the other side of the aisle is held up as a bad example; as though that will justify the ‘principal’.
Interesting concept!
Not for me!
Ya gotta contend for the faith!
Iffn one ain't up to it; well... ok then.
I still can’t find the veiled Mormonism that this woman is opposing.
You mean THIS one?
And THEN they'd bi complain that only CHIRST should be able to exhibit such behavior!
Matthew 15:16
"Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them.
Matthew 231. Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:
2. "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.
3. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.
4. They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
5. "Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long;
6. they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;
7. they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them `Rabbi.'
8. "But you are not to be called `Rabbi,' for you have only one Master and you are all brothers.
9. And do not call anyone on earth `father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.
10. Nor are you to be called `teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ.
11. The greatest among you will be your servant.
12. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
13. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.
14. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.
16. "Woe to you, blind guides! You say, `If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.'
17. You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?
18. You also say, `If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.'
19. You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
20. Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.
21. And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it.
22. And he who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who sits on it.
23. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
24. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
25. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.
26. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
27. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.
28. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
29. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous.
30. And you say, `If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'
31. So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.
32. Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your forefathers!
33. "You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?
34. Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.
35. And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.
36. I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation.
37. "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.
38. Look, your house is left to you desolate.
39. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, `Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.' "
Mark 7:26-27
26. The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.
27. "First let the children eat all they want," he told her, "for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs."
And St. Paul chimes in...
Galatians 5:12
As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!
Ah... you’re finally seeing the light!
(When I’m TALKING; no one call tell if my spelling is correct...)

All I have to say about your feeble and, yet, so inept attempts to proclaim to one and all about the evilness of the Mormon church, while seeking to whitewash and occlude the corruption within your own belief system is "WWJD?"
Also, read what some top notch Evangelical scholars had to say about what your MO and how much good it is, or, how bad it is.
Mormon scholarship, apologetics, and evangelical neglect: Losing the battle and not knowing it?
Too many evangelicals accept and propagate certain myths about Mormon scholarship. It is a myth that there are few, if any, traditional Mormon scholars with training in fields pertinent to evangelical-Mormon debates. It is a myth that when Mormons receive training in historiography, biblical languages, theology, and philosophy they invariably abandon traditional Latter-day Saints (LDS) beliefs in the historicity of the Book of Mormon and the prophethood of Joseph Smith. It is a myth that liberal Mormons have so shaken the foundations of LDS belief that Mormonism is crumbling apart. It is a myth that neoorthodox Mormons have influenced the theology of their church to such a degree that it will soon abandon traditional emphases and follow a path similar to the RLDS (Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) or the World-Wide Church of God. These are myths based upon ignorance and selective reading. Evangelicals who wish to be responsible must abandon them.
--snip--
The evangelical world needs to wake up and respond to contemporary Mormon scholarship. If not, we will needlessy lose the battle without ever knowing it. Our suggestions are as follows: First, evangelicals need to overcome inaccurate presuppositions about Mormonism. Second, evangelical counter-cultists need to refer to qualified persons LDS scholarship that is beyond their ability to rebut. Third, evangelical academicians need to make Mormonism, or some aspects of it, an area of professional interest. Fourth, evangelical publishers need to cease publishing works that are uninformed, misleading, or otherwise inadequate. Fifth, scholars in the evangelical community ought to collaborate in several books addressing the issues raised in this paper. Related to this, professional journals should encourage articles on these same topics. Finally, might we suggest that evangelical scholarly societies form study groups to assess the claims made by LDS scholars. Members of the Evangelical Theological Society have made a move in this direction with the recent formation of the Society for the Study of Alternative Religions (SSAR). The fact is that the growth of Mormonism is outpacing even the highest predictions of professional sociologists of religion, and is on its way, within eighty years, to becoming the first world-religion since Islam in the seventh century. With such growth, the needs expressed in this paper will become ever more pressing as the twenty-first century approaches.

Many antagonists of the Church have repeatedly told me to "wake up and smell the coffee" thinking they were being ever so witty and cutesy, but, in spite of the worst efforts, I have never felt the spirit of the Lord with anybody who sought to destroy my faith, and elsie, I don't feel his spirit or his truth in any of your posts, only angry and bitter emotions.
Please answer me one question: Why would I want to listen to you and those who practice this same type of denigrating love that has been rendered worthless and impotent?
Nah, you not only got the wrong religion, but even the wrong sex. Her name is Hilary Weeks and the song is “El Shaddai.”
Nah, you not only got the wrong religion, but even the wrong sex. Her name is Hilary Weeks and the song is “El Shaddai.” When Amy Grant sang it, then it became okay to listen to the song, but not if a Mormon was singing it. I still find that type of bigotry rather amusing, amusing but sad.
The author of the song, Michael Card, has a web site and a discussion board on it ( http://michaelcard.com ) and one of the posters said this:
“I am not offended. I would worship with Mormons, too. I’ve prayed with one or two.
How are you going to lead them to Christ if you start out by insulting them? The way of the Lord is gentle, not breaking a bruised reed.”
I know what you mean. I tell people that on the internet I’m really good looking and some of them even believe it.
You mean, for example, sending out 60,000 missionaries per year to knock on Christians' door and inform them that the Gospel they believe in was taken from the earth and replaced by a "true gospel", translated via looking in a hat and is the ONLY way to salvation? By informing them that the Trinity is false and the mormon "plan of salvation" is superior to all beliefs of said Christian? That the Cross of Jesus is anathema?
Yeah, that'll do it!
Keep telling us how to lead folks to Christ.
