Some airlines were telling passengers on Saturday that new government security regulations prohibit them from leaving their seats beginning an hour before landing
The regulations are a response to a suspected terrorism incident on Christmas Day.
Air Canada said in a statement that new rules imposed by the Transportation Security Administration limit on-board activities by passengers and crew in U.S. airspace. The airline said that during the final hour of flight passengers must remain seated. They won't be allowed access to carryon baggage or to have any items on their laps.
Flight attendants on some domestic flights are informing passengers of similar rules. Passengers on a flight from New York to Tampa Saturday morning were also told they must remain in their seats and couldn't have items in their laps, including laptops and pillows.
The TSA declined to confirm the new restrictions.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement Saturday that passengers flying to the U.S. from overseas may notice extra security, but she said the measures "are designed to be unpredictable, so passengers should not expect to see the same thing everywhere."
A transportation security official speaking on condition of anonymity because the official wasn't authorized to speak publicly said passengers traveling internationally could see increased security screening at gates and when they check their bags, as well as additional measures on flights such as stowing carryons and personal items before the plane lands.
A Nigerian passenger on a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam allegedly attempted to start a fire as the plane prepared to land in Detroit on Friday, according to authorities. The incident has sparked a major international terrorism investigation.
Air Canada said it was limiting passengers to one carryon bag in response to a request from the U.S. and Canadian governments.

Careful there. Flying your own airline, means you determine your own destination. Not that sound an idea as we have seen.
Why doesn’t the rest of the civilized word copy the safety procedures that the Isrealis use?
Circulation is a problem for some people. Already prone to clot up on flights, this directive could be very detrimental to them. They need to stand up and walk around a bit to avoid problems.
The long captivation that take place on the tarmacs at times, can also a very risky situation for these people.
Because the Israeli procedures are politically incorrect.
It has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with sweeping government power over all our lives in a politically correct society.

The airlines are fast becoming aluminum jail cells for the duration of our flights. Due to trial lawyers and fear of them the airlines already OVER-REACT on turbulence and keep the light on for anything. This is WHAT the scum terrorist want...us enslaved and hating our own existence.
I frequently fly to Asia from the west coast, and passengers routinely ignore instructions on these flights. We could be descending thru turbulence and people are queueing up for the restrooms, or doing the same when we are taxiing for takeoff. Instructions are given in multiple languages but some people somehow think they are exempt, or that the urge to pee trumps all. I even see people unloading or trying to unload the overheads as soon as we touch down. Just once I’d like to see how many people would go flying if the pilot did a brake tap when all those buckles unsnap as the wheels touch down.

Stupid. They are going to have to have a “last call” 10 or more minutes before the last hour for use of the toilets. So all of the fliers will be in a long line trying to get in before then.
And this after they have plied you with all those free beverages.
Why not just strip everyone naked, then wrap them in duct tape? Remove the seats, throw everyone on board. It would save weight, fuel costs and they could lower ticket fares to boot!
Really? Can you please elaborate? I was thinking that they have armed air marshalls on all El-Al flights.

The solution is obvious.
No visitors, tourist or student visas from ANYONE traveling from countries known to be predominantly muslim; ...or having made connection from any such countries!
No exceptions.
No "humanitarian" anything.
No age limits.
Applies to everyone with the exception of diplomats, and those watched 24/7. Or simply expelled. I see no reason America needs any muslim non-resident and non citizen.
Naturalized or natural born muslims arrested and indicted for terrorist support activities? Deported to the last know family country of residence, and prohibited ever from returning in ANY capacity.
Well Duh - this won’t work (the stay in your seat for the hour before landing).
They just do it at take off. (rather than land in Detroit, take off from Detroit).
