Hyperinflation is what I’ve been afraid is coming our way. I don’t see how it can be avoided. I have such a hard time accepting this reality. That this would happen to my beloved country is a nightmare.

I have a questions. Can you install a hand pump on a well? My well’s pump is underground and when the power fails, I have no water. I can always get water from the pool or the nearby pond, but then how do you make it safe to drink?

Filter it to remove sediment & then put in 1 drop of chlorine bleach per cup of water. If you boil the water to purify it, transfer it back and forth between two bottles to re-aerate it - tastes better that way.

Funny you should mention that. There is a house being built about a mile down the road from me. There is a water line 50' from this guy's property, yet he drilled two wells, each costing about $20K to drill. One of them has a hand pump installed on it. I haven't met the owner yet, but I've been told he is a retired MD. The house they are building looks like something you would see in a gated community, very high end, but it also has solar panels on the roof. Curious.

I installed a simple pump for my well a couple of years ago and it works fine. You will need to know your well depth, the waters static level, and pipe diameter. All this info should be available from your well driller.

A very dear friend of mine invented this. It is unique from anything else on the planet. Not sure how to make a clickable link but you can cut and paste.

Can you install a hand pump on a well?

There was a hand pump on the backyard well on my great-uncle's farm back in the 60s with another in the kitchen. I don't even have a well - I'm on 'city water'. I guess I'll be buying a rain barrel in the spring.

There are lots of sources for hand pumps on the web for both deep and shallow wells.

We have a deep well hand pump in case there's no electric. If you need a pump, or info about a pump, try Lehmans Non-Electic. They sell to the Amish, and we've bought a lot of stuff off them to get set up for off-the-grid. They have high quality goods you can't find anywhere else.

You can scoop small amounts of water out of a narrow well neck by using a can attached to heavy string. It helps to put a stone in the bottom of the can to keep it upright.

(Boil water for at least 15 minutes to sterilize it if you must use pond water etc. A magnifying glass, or even a pair of reading classes, will help start a fire in an emergency.)

Solar h2o pumps work very well, and are affordable. You will need to construct a storage system for the pumped water. Sun and gravity work quite well for this application.

You likely have a deep well, and if you do a normal pitcher or hand pump won’t have enough suction. You’ll need a specialty pump like this one.

And to assuage the fevered minds those who will wonder, I have no affiliation with that site or the people who run it.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

15 minutes in a pressure cooker. This the safest.

You can also add Clorox to the water and there are some filters.

Your grandmother or great grandmother likely had one. A really deep well could be a problem. You can pull water only so high, but you can always push it up. Here's a website which states that their "deep" hand pump can manage 200'. That's down to the water level, not to the bottom of the well. Their shallow pump is only good to 25'.

Bison Hand Water Pumps

This is the "Deep" model, which can be used with a submersible pump still present.

Cost's 1,655.00, although that includes only 64 feet of pipe and lift rod.So your cost would depend on how deep you need to go.

Lehmans (no, not those guys) has their Non-electric catalog with all kinds of hand pumps, well pumps, cisterns, water purification stuff, you name it. If you want to live like it’s 1880, you can buy it through Lehmans. Cool catalog too. There are limitations on how deep you can pump water by hand, (it gets pretty tough around 200’ or so, apparently, but it’s doable.)
