An Army general in Iraq backed away from his threat today to court martial female soldiers who get pregnant.
"I see absolutely no circumstance where I would punish a female soldier by court martial for a violation ... none," Maj. Gen. Anthony Cucolo III wrote to ABC News in an exclusive statement. " I fully intend to handle these cases through lesser disciplinary action."
Cucolo triggered debate, some of it angry, when his Nov. 4 policy forbidding pregnancy among his soldiers became public recently. His policy statement said violation of the rule could be punishable by court martial, and that it would also apply to the men who get female soldiers pregnant, even if the couple is married.
While legal and military experts said the order was proper, a spokeswoman for the National Organization for Women called it "ridiculous."
"How dare any government say we're going to impose any kind of punishment on women for getting pregnant," NOW President Terry O'Neill said. "This is not the 1800s."

Just another symptom of our decline. How does one go about undoing this crap?
Pregnant soldiers, what a concept.
“This is not the 1800s.”
No, it’s not. Back in the 1800s, women weren’t very often deployed as soldiers in warzones.
If you really want out of the Army, there are ways to get drummed out without serving time in the stockade. IMO this is just one more way.
injection, implants or IUD’s come to mind
same penalty for refusal as for those who refuse immunizations, exercise and PT test, and weight control
discharge
How about backing off prosecuting SEALs for doing their job?
Editor needed. The proper plural is Courts Martial, not court martials. (sorry, been reading too many state of education threads this AM)
I dunno, when I want to evaluate military policy I always consult with NOW. They’ve really been on top of the whole muslim honor killings.
You can get a court martial for getting sun burned, having your military ID stolen, getting hurt, being late or a million other things. If you don’t want pregnant women in combat then don’t put women in combat.
I recall the time when, if a female service member because pregnant, she was out within two weeks. We should never have begun depending on women in the service to the degree that we have. It is a distraction and is counterproductive. Sorry ladies, but that’s just the way it is and it is no way to run a war, political correctness be damned.
One of my biggest complaints about women being in the military (and I have several), is that when a woman becomes a mother, her FIRST priority should be her children.
I am a mother of three, and very few things make me more disgusted than a mother who signs up to be shipped out, leaving her children behind.
You want to be a soldier, fine, but don't drag children into the mix.
Don’t want to get deployed?
Easy.
Make a “choice” and get preggers.
Don’t want to be limited in your “choices”?
Don’t join up.
And many, many women that I know that are military totally agree - and they distain the women who’ve opted the sleazy “progressive” way out.
Gads, libs are so very sleazy, treasonous, and totally vile.
People complaining about the General’s order should have to explain to the soldier having to go to Iraq to REPLACE the pregnant women why he/she has to go.
Earth to NOW: It’s called a war zone. It’s called sacrifice. Try it sometime.
I could have told them this wouldn’t work. In the USAF about once a year some general in WestPAC decided the way to cut the VD rate was to give an Article 15 (Captain’s Mast for you Squids) to anyone diagnosed with VD. That just caused a surge in Black Market antibiotics and complications.
Another reason why women shouldn’t serve on submarines. Of course, there is the alternative of haveing all females deployed on ships or overseas combat tours to have implanted contraceptives for the duration of the deployment/cruise. but then civil rights folks will protest about that too.
Human nature: if you believe your life may/will end soon, reproduction likely becomes a high priority. Survival of the species is deeply ingrained. Hence one of many reasons for no women in, or even near, combat - protecting and impregnating them becomes a natural priority for men, distracting from the more cerebral abstract tasks of modern warfare.
Yes, they should only allow barren women in the armed forces.
It should be placed in their chow, along with the saltpeter.
