POLITICO has learned that Rep. Parker Griffith, a freshman Democrat from Alabama, will announce today that hes switching parties to become a Republican.
According to a senior GOP aide familiar with the decision, the announcement will take place in this afternoon in his home district in northern Alabama.

Watch Keef Overbite get absolutely apoplectic about this one tonight. Hell, I might even watch just for the entertainment value of watching him sputter all over the camera.
Yes, Reichert has been somewhat disappointing. But I’d take him any day over Rick Larsen.
I’m convinced that Reichert has his eye one something bigger (possible senate race?) and is afraid to be labeled an extremist.
Reichert would be an improvement over Patty Murray...but then again who wouldn’t be?
Apparently the problem with party switchers in the South is not in Congress but in the county races. It is said that Lubbock County became Republican overnight from switchers, but many are not that conservative once in office. Several parish Republican officials in LA lined up early with Mary Landrieu.
Anybody know what that district is like? Is this a place where a conservative can win?
Exactly. I'd take a solid fiscal and social conservative who switches from Dem to GOP, over somebody whose always been a GOP (or maybe some third partier) who only focuses on fiscal issues because s/he is a social moderate/liberal.
Easy, cover it up by not discussing it at all
Not necessarily a good thing. All this does is move the Republican Party to the left. We need no more RINOs at all.
Also shows me he does not have the courage of his convictions.
He should resign and demand a special election, as Albert Watson (SC) did in 1965 and Phil Gramm (TX) in 1983. That would shore up his seat for 2010.
ok ok
excuse my ignorance here, and sorry to stop the party so soon
What does this mean in the immediate future, what does this do for healthcare vote? that should be our main concern right now
It means one less vote the Democratic House has to ‘play with’.
Like I said, not honorable. That’s how we got into the mess we’re in.
“Right. But a RINO can serve a purpose - a temporary placeholder upon which to build a Republican majority. Until we can get a conservative in.”
You think like a chess player.
VERY good! LOL!
Shelby’s on my “go home” list.
Once again he sold his soul for less than a million. Cheap date.
Vote Shelby Out !
Remember that in Reconstruction the Democrats were the conservatives and the Republicans were the liberals and that was basically the way it was for more than a century. Remained like that in Alabama well in the 90’s.
We now have a situation where the Republicans are the conservatives and the Democrats are the liberals. And honestly, I think that the liberal control of the legislature that has existed for the last couple of decades ends next year.
Words cannot overstate how important this party switch is for us. And anyone who is daring to say “no, thanks” to Griffith knows nothing about Alabama politics and why this party switch is so important for the conservative movement in this state. We’re on the verge of taking back the state after a quarter century in the political wilderness.
Wake up... right now we need people who will go up against Pelosi and company no matter who they are or where they came from... this isn’t the time for absolute purity.
You summed up the south very well.
I just heard the state run radio news and they are saying this is a ‘survival move’ and nothing more.
Dern, who woulda thunk it? ;)
this will sting Obama and their leadership a bit..
Yeah but you know full well it’s Democratic at every other level. Obama was the only Democrat to lose it in ‘08.
Words cannot overstate how important this is. This switch probably signals we take the legislature next year, even the Senate which people still say is impossible.
Meghan? Is that you?
Did your dad put you up to this?
