In the last year or so of George W. Bushs second term, commentators used to talk a lot about the conspicuous scarcity of other Republicans willing to stand up and defend him. I never thought wed see Barack Obama face the same problem before his first year was over.
But as Obamas approval scores 50 percent in the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll sink, it is getting harder and harder to find a full-throated supporter of the president.
You need go no further from here than the op-ed page of Thursdays Washington Post to see what I mean. Time was, and not all that long ago, when the Post was thought of as the liberal paper in Washington, a reliable advocate for the kind of policies pursued by Democratic presidents.
“Don’t think we aren’t keeping score, bro’.”
I wouldn’t bet on it. See how the dems in DC turn on a dime when they get their pork? The dem voter is no different IMHO.
I just don't see it.
Exactly. It’s very likely that the majority of Dem voters are ‘deserting’ him now because they don’t feel the handouts are flowing out of D.C. fast enough.
Let them pass a few more entitlement programs, and it will be back to 70+% Dem approval. The moderates were ousted from that party a long time ago.
Well, they bail out unless and until they’re bought off. End result—they stick with The One, popularity or no.
Lot of damage has been done already...
You don’t see it because it isn’t there. Support for this guy has been more or less stable on the left and the right. It is the Independents who are turning on him and this is a group without which he has no chance to win.
I have to agree. Republicans only make up about 30% of the electorate. Independents don’t constitute the rest of the voters in polls that say they don’t like how Obama is performing. Some percentage of that negative polling has to be Dems who are angry that he’s not paying their mortgage and buying them a new car fast enough.
OK. I’ll grant that you could be correct about the Independents, and I understand how important that is. However, the headline says “Democrats bail on Obama” and that is a pretty poor headline, IMO, because it is untrue.
I’d love to see the ‘rats abandoning him. But the worship of BO continues in the Senate. Cases in point: Ben Nelson and Mary Landrieu and Blanche Lincoln’s whoring.
He may be the most incompetent puppet that ever got his strings pulled but he’s THEIR incompetent puppet. He will always have them.
Not one democratic senator or representative has voted against his wishes yet.
article is wishful thinking.
Unfortunately, they’re not bailing on Obama effectively enough to stop the Barackster from shoving health care (and some other things) down our throats.
Axelrod said yesterday that the administration could care less about poll numbers.
I would love to be a fly on the wall in the Oval Office. I have a feeling that the administration is in complete disarray and Zero is desperate. The vast majority of this country hates his a$$ with a passion not seen before and the rest of the world laughs at him.
What the hell is wrong with us?!!
sw
I don’t buy it.
Democrats will sell their children if it will help Obama.
The media is trying to portray Obama as a “centrist” so that his Obamacare bill doesn’t seem extremist.
Obama is far to the left and he is EXACTLY what democrats want.
Broder is a ultra liberal homey. I detest and despise Broder.
