The South Korean military said Monday it has removed some 1,300 land mines this year from the country's rural areas bordering North Korea, a reminder of the tense 1950-53 Korean War that ended in a truce.
In the operations that lasted from April to November, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) mobilized 3,300 personnel to remove mines from a total of 100,000 square meters of land south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), it said in a release. Since starting the operations in 1999, JCS has cleared 65,000 mines.
"It was a rewarding operation as we moved carefully not to disrupt the natural environment of the areas we cleared," Maj. Jeong Heon-min, operation chief, was quoted as saying. Land mines pose a threat to civilians working in remote areas near the DMZ, especially farmers.
JCS said it plans to clear 140,000 square meters of land next year. The areas covered this year included Yeoncheon-gun on the west and Goseong-gun on the east. Both abut the military demarcation line with North Korea.
The Koreas remain theoretically at war with each other after their fratricidal war that killed millions of civilians and soldiers on both sides and implicated foreign powers.

Before someone protests, the South Koreans are replacing the minefields with automated sentry guns, which are altogether nastier.

Nice. I guess Samsung fouund it profitable to move in the military business.
Wha? Oh no, don't tell anyone.

Turns out Samsung makes a surprising amount of defense product under license or of domestic design.
We should buy a few hundred thousand of these for use on our southern border.
I was just thinking that. Those sentries would solve all of our problems.
They’re replacing them with cyberneticized machine guns.
Think the sentry guns from Aliens, and you’ve got the right idea. Think what a couple dozen of them on a kilometer front can do.
Don’t have the worries of mines, don’t have to spend time or money on maintaining a forward fence, just post thousands of signs declaring a free fire zone and install these things.
If you’re worried about accidental fatalities, I believe Samsung was talking about an optional dual-ammo-feed model, so you can default to rubber rounds for people and switch to APIT rounds for anyone who thinks it’d be clever to try to run over the things with a vehicle.
1,300 land mines Acitvated around Congress

The US military said Monday it has placed some 1,300 land mines around the country’s House & Senate areas bordering the Capital, a reminder of the tense 2008 Election that ended in a Marxist outcome.
In the operations that lasted from November 2008 to December 2009, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) mobilized 3,300 personnel to place mines from a total of 100,000 square yards of land south of the De-Americanized Zone (DAZ), it said in a release. Since starting the operations in Nov 2008, JCS has placed 65,000 mines and activating 1,300..
“It was a rewarding operation as we moved carefully not to disrupt the natural environment of the areas we placed them in,” Maj. American, operation chief, was quoted as saying. Land mines pose a great help to civilians working in remote areas near the DAZ, especially Patriots.
JCS said it plans to place 140,000 square yards of land next year. The areas covered this year included the House on the west and Senate on the east. Both a but the Capital de-Americanization line with The Marxist Capital.
The Marxist remain at war with Patriotic Americans after their war on the Constitution tried to destroy America.
There... that would be much better....
Samsung did an absolutely beautiful job in designing the sentry.

If we were to put these on our southern border, I would put them between 2 walls. The first being right on the border itself, and the second being a few feet in. The only people who would be killed would be those who violated the first wall. Innocents on the outside of either wall would not be in danger.
Over the same period time, North Korea allegedly buried some 2,600 mines in the country's rural areas bordering South Korea...
Maybe as a later stage, but you can build, buy, set up and feed these sentry guns for a lot less money and almost no time as compared to a wall.
Maybe build the walls later, but for now, throw up a couple of cyclone fences with signs and start installing sentry guns.
