Fear of violence grows in mountaintop mining fight (enviro-goons vs. coal miners)
AP via Yahoo! ^ | December 19, 2009 | VICKI SMITH

It was the slap heard 'round the coalfields: Cordelia Ruth Tucker, wearing the fluorescent-striped shirt of a miner, strode past West Virginia state troopers and into a stream of marchers protesting mountaintop removal mining to deliver an audible smack.

(snip)

There have been nearly 100 arrests in 20 protests, most involving trespassing. Led by a new group called Climate Ground Zero, the activists have chained themselves to giant dump trucks, scaled 80-foot trees to stop blasting and paddled into a 9 million-gallon sludge pond. They've blocked roads, hung banners and staged sit-ins.

Virginia-based Massey Energy claims a single 3 1/2-hour occupation at Progress Coal Co. in Twilight cost the company $300,000.

(snip)

Massey equates anti-coal with anti-American. Pittsburgh-based Consol Energy blames the planned layoffs of 482 miners on a lawsuit by the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition.

Activist Chuck Nelson, a former underground miner from Glen Daniel, said the longer surface miners face uncertainty, the more the danger grows: The federal government must act soon, one way or the other.

And if the EPA comes down on the environmentalists' side?

"Well," Nelson said, "there's a possibility it might not be safe to live in the Coal River Valley."

Elections, consequences

But, but, Obama isn't causing the trouble, it's environmentalists. Obama is as pure as the wind driven snow.

Here we are. Turned from a nation that actually produces something, to a service based nation.

Clinton told us this was going to happen, we just didn't listen.

Oh, stuff it. Environmental terrorists have been destroying jobs and industries in the US for the past half century, along with stealing land rights, water rights, mining rights, and on and on.

Theft is murder by increments. Using corrupt lawyers, courts, legislators, and bureaucrats to further their causes does not diminish their crimes, but rather aggrevates them.

Well that settles it for me! I'm on board now that you have cleared that up. I was so misinformed. You go ahead and whack 'em all. Please let us know when you have that done will ya? We'll have a party or something. Put me down for the pop.

And oh, btw - do give God a call to straighten Him out on that 9 commandments mix up. /s

I am sure you’re being sarcastic. BJ Clinton didn’t tell me a damn thing I didn’t already know.

Besides the “fact” he never had sex with that woman....

Nah, I knew what you were saying. You just didn’t want to say it. Fair enough.

I still disagree. There are ways to get this taken care of w/out getting anyone dead regardless of how badly they “need killin’”. That’s just not a good thing for that community to do to itself.

...I'd be dishonest if I were to say that I'd be the least bit upset if some of them wound up taking dirt nap for what they're doing...

Until, there are real consequences to what they are doing they won't stop.

The miners don't care whether it's people outside or inside the community. Nobody messes with their mining jobs, not even their own brother. I've been down in a working mine, Bethlehem at Summersville, (Appalachian studies in Seminary) and talked to the men working there.

To a man they loved mining. One man had just returned after some years absence. Tried his hand at business and other things. Wasn't happy. Came back to mining and he was obviously very happy to be there. He tried to explain it to me. Said it's a true brotherhood down below. He said you can disagree and not even like each other uptop, but below it's a brotherhood. Like in the army. That was an enlightening visit for me. One I'll never forget.

The green people are playing with fire and they are going to get burned. The history of this state is something. No other like it. the people are tough. You do not mess with them. I'm betting that the miners will have the upper hand, but the gov. will call in the troops again to put them down. I fear big troubles.

Well West Virginia, you’re a blue state. How’s that “Hope and Change” working out for you?

Along with what you’ve said they should also realize that every sheriff in that area is the son, grandson, grand daughter, daughter, cousin, sister, brother, of a coal miner. Heck even the governor is the nephew of one of the miner’s lost in the 1968 Farmington No. 9 mine disaster. Do they think anyone would bother to investigate their disappearance?

By the way, right back at you. In the story you referenced, when Moses came down off the mountain with the two tablets, how many thousands of people were slaughtered for their disobedience? How many were slaughtered in the books of Joshua, and all through Judges? And for a lot less.

We are not living in a biblical fairy tale. This is here and now. People work to live, and to live in a civilized manner.

Non-productive leftists aren't satisifed to not be productive. They insist on taking the fruits of our labor, and leaving us to die in a sub-human existence. They fully deserve to die.

If you are so sympathetic to the leftist environmental terrorists, why don't you go back to DU?

So, once again, stuff it.

You got that right chris. Gov. Manchin is from a mining family. Good man. Conservative Dem. I’ve told him a couple of times that I’m praying for his enlightenment, so he can drop the “D” after his name.

Well democrats from that area are different than what most people think of when they hear democrat. I was born in SE Ohio but my Grandma and all of her siblings came from WV so I spent a lot of time in those hills growing up. My Grat Uncles and cousins were all miners.

I’m not sympathetic to them at all. I agree with your assessment of who many of them are.

I was not referencing that part of scripture, only that you seem to think theft and murder are the same thing. My bad - I thought you knew what you wrote, particularly since I copied it back in.

I can’t help but wonder why you would try to advance an argument with biblical references that you say are fairy tales. You got me there.

If they fully deserve to die as you have said, well you go right ahead and get it done. Let us know how that goes. Ok?

As for the DU, I don’t go there. I get my fill of irrational nut jobs every so often here on FR.

Ah yes. That’s plenty. I’m good for now. Bye, and thanks!

You're sure that they're not Community Organizers? (And yes, I do know that they're the same thing!)

You are right. They are the old-time democrats. Most of them are not politically saavy. They are loyal to a fault and they will vote like grandpappy voted come hell or high water. They think that they have to be a democrat. They don’t understand that the party left them a long time ago. They are conservative, religious, and stubborn. I love them very much.

It’s a shame. They are the salt of the earth and a huge part of the backbone of this nation in both peace and war.

Hopefully this will help get them on the correct side. The jacka$$ envirowhackos will be the useful idiots for a change instead of our rino legislators.

I just came back from Fairmont having gone there for my sister’s funeral and to settle the accounts.

The old coke plant is still being remediated, Philips (old Westinghouse) still stands; Owens and the aluminum plant watch over the potholes on the Speedway; Joe Manchin graced the Times/West Virginian each day; and low hanging fog drifted over the river where barges once marched to Pittsburgh to mount the mills where steel poured out like ribbons to wrap the free world to forge a peace wrought fist-by-fist from lump after lump of the life-giving carbon where life began.

The bats own the caves, there’s no place to hide; are we stripping the blankets or crawling inside?
