Veteran Cuban leader Fidel Castro on Friday dismissed US President Barack Obama's trip to UN climate change talks in Copenhagen as a "show," and complained that the world's poor will shoulder the burden of any summit agreement. Castro's opinion article, titled "The Moment of Truth," also criticizes the "fascist methods" used by Danish police to put down protesting environmental activists.
"It is already evident that a great catastrophe threatens our species," wrote Castro, 82.
Perhaps the worst part of the summit "is blind selfishness of a rich and privileged minority that intents to impose the bulk of the necessary sacrifices on the immense majority of planet inhabitants," Castro wrote.
He opined that "for the chiefs of the empire (the United States), despite their maneuvers and cynical lies, the moment of truth is arriving. Their own allies believe them less and less."
In the article, which appeared in government-run media, Castro quotes at length leftist Bolivian President Evo Morales and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who both spoke at the summit.
The former Cuban president, who still leads the Cuban Communist Party, earlier criticized Obama for accepting the Nobel Peace Prize and lashed out at his climate policies, accusing the US president of not fighting the "oligarchy of irresponsibly" who are opposing change.
"Obama is not ignorant. Like (Al) Gore, he knows the grave danger that threatens everyone, but he vacillates and is weak in the face of a blind and irresponsible oligarchy in that country," Castro wrote in an editorial published December 9.
Castro has not appeared in public since he underwent major intestinal surgery more than three years ago. His brother Raul became interim president in 2006, and took over the presidency in February 2008.

How it must hurt Barry that one of his greatest heroes mocked him.
Obambi’s own friends and allies are turning on him now. Wow... what a difference a year makes.
It’s just an act. They’re all asshole buddies when they think you aren’t looking.
Nobama desrves criticism from all; however, STFU Castro, you bloviating old fool.
“Veteran Cuban leader Fidel Castro....”
Uh, that would be an iron fisted dictator who has held power by force for almost 50 years. An immoral scumbag. A devil.
algore has gotten so rich from this hoax that I’m sure he does’t give a $hit what really happens. it makes me sick. people are losing jobs, people will not be able to afford to live their own lives....and algore and cohorts will laugh all the way to the bank.
People are starting to see that Obama is nothing but an empty suit.
Too late.
The damage is done and more to come and I don’t know if our country can survive three years of his “leadership”
Maybe that was the plan all along.
I find it incredible that Castro is still alive. Has he been seen in public at all recently, walking, moving about? I just find it amazing the old commie is still breathing.
Those are the very methods he has used on dissenters for 50 years.
Communism is still the grave danger that threatens everyone,it matters not if Castro or Obama is the leader.
Hussein obama’s only accomplishment is that he is the first mulatto to botch the oath of office of the President of the United States........
How are we going to survive 3 more years of serial humiliation like this?
They’re just trying to make him appear centrist. Takes the edge off radicalism.
Castro is playing good cop; bad cop.
He’s still breathing but is pretty much mindless. He was poisoned in SA; bleed on the brain...which fries the brain...so they keep him hidden from the public. He acts like looney. He didn’t write this there is a ghost writer that writes all these articles.
“People are starting to see that Obama is nothing but an empty suit.”
Empty suit sounds good. Empty suits don’t lead this country into a socialist, Muslim state, which is where I thought he was going to take us. So far, he’s been ineffective at even the rather modest things he’s attempted.
